How to Practice Self-Care with a Busy Schedule

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

In a world of crowded class schedules, meetings, and social lives, it’s easy to forget how to take care of ourselves. With these tips and tricks implemented into your daily life, you’ll feel ready to take on the world with sanity.

Remember, self-care is never selfish!

1. Get that beauty rest.

No matter what schedule you have, it’s always important to make time for yourself –– Yes, even if you have the terror that is an 8 AM class. That means waking up and avoiding that snooze button. Set a time, hop up, and get going. Get a good night’s sleep, even if it means you need to stop studying late at night or even miss a class.

2. As much as it’s a cliché, breakfast is a must.

Anyone who knows me also knows I am HUGE on breakfast. Okay, I know not everyone likes to wake up and eat eggs right away, but it’s seriously vital to start your day. It is recommended to eat within two hours of waking up to avoid energy loss and overeating. Also, eat what you want to eat! Don’t force yourself to eat something just because it has protein. Find what you love that your body loves as well.

3. Make time to decompress.

Knowing how to recover from that midterm is super beneficial for mind and soul. You might not always have time to take a quick break throughout the day, but try going on a walk and turning on the chillest playlist. Or if you want to try a new level of mindfulness, try meditating with apps like Headspace of Simple Habit to clear your mind. Writing in a journal is also proven to be relieving for any kind of stress.

4. Release endorphins.

Everyone has their own thing that makes them feel amazing after. Whether it’s going for a run or eating your favorite food, take the time to treat yourself to what your body craves. Watch a good flick or hang out with that one friend who makes you cry laughing for a total mood boost.

5. Stop overthinking.

Ah yes, easier said than done, I’m aware. But from what I’ve learned, some things happen for the best of reasons that we can’t make sense of at the moment. That’s okay! Take things step by step and remember the grand scale of things. Missing that one assignment or having to switch shifts at work will not end you.

6. Work on physical health.

Although indulging on your favorite snacks can give you a great sense of self-care, also remember the stuff you need to be healthy. Make some changes to your diet if you’re not feeling pleased with how things are right now. Swap out that slice of pizza for some whole grains or try something new. Make sure to get full servings of fruit & vegetables to make your body happy. This also means drinking tons of water and possibly taking Vitamins C & D to prevent sickness. Whatever you prefer, make sure you’re doing it with yourself in mind.

The hardest thing to do when under stress it to take care of ourselves. So often we forget that our mental and physical health determines our success in daily life. No matter what obstacles or crammed study sessions you may have, make sure to put yourself first.
