Marcus Smart: Off the Bench

9/29/2012

A new edition was added to the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Basketball Team. He was a McDonalds All American player and the No. 1 Texas ranked prospect. Marcus Smart, signed and committed to Oklahoma State University in September of 2011.

Marcus is originally from Lancaster, Texas. But after his eighth grade year the Smart family moved to Flower Mound, Texas, where he attended Edward S. Marcus High School. He was the youngest of four boys, has always been a great team player, a stellar all around player and always-made sure school, and family came first.

Marcus had a choice to attend the University of Oklahoma, the University of North Carolina and the University of Texas at Austin. But thankfully, he and his high school teammate, Phillip Forte III, decided to finish off their basketball and education together at Oklahoma State University. They chose OSU because of the Cowboy Basketball coaching staff, players and genuinine Oklahoma State University Cowboy spirit. Marcus plans to stay all four years at Oklahoma State University because he believes that school comes first.

Marcus wants all future basketball players to know that you should, “believe in yourself at all times. No matter how difficult the situation gets it’s going to get ugly before it gets pretty, but no struggle means, no progress.”

Mitt Romney and African Americans

9/13/2012

“I understand how difficult it can be for an African-American in today’s society. In fact, I can relate to black people very well indeed. My ancestors once owned slaves, and it is in my lineage to work closely with the black community. However, just because they were freed over a century ago doesn’t mean they can now be freeloaders. They need to be told to work hard, and the incentives just aren’t there for them anymore. When I’m president I plan to work closely with the black community to bring a sense of pride and work ethic back into view for them.”

That was a direct quote from 2012 Presidential Republican candidate Mitt Romney when he addressed a crowd in Prattville, Ala. Being a black female raised in a predominately white area my whole life, I can barely relate to black struggles mainly because I was blessed enough to never deal with discrimination.

Does The Game Got Any Game Left?

4/5/2012

B.E.T, Black Entertainment Television, launched the Season 5 premiere of the original series The Game. The series started on CW, but after the station didn’t receive the ratings it expected from the show, they dropped the series after season 3. However, after many faithful fans, including myself, complained and begged for the show to be brought back, it was. B.E.T picked up the series in January of 2010 with season 4.

The downside about B.E.T taking the series is the acting, writing, and characters took an unexpected turn. The series started out in season 1 with a rookie football player, Derwin Davis, and his college girlfriend, Melanie Barnett while they tried to get adjusted to the life of a NFL star. Also on the team were the star wide receiver and team captain, Jason Pitts, his wife, Kelly Pitts, and their daughter, Brittany. They last family is focused on the “forty-million dollar” quarterback bachelor, Malik Wright and his single-mother, Tasha Mack. Throughout seasons 1-3 the series experienced the  divorce of Kelly and Jason Pitts, the rise of Malik Wrights career, the fall of Jason Pitts career, the many breaks ups of Derwin and Melanie, the marriage of Derwin and Melanie and the birth of Derwin’s illegitimate son.

After the last episode of season 4 which was launched by B.E.T, the fans were quite confused. Kelly, Jason Pits ex wife, had left the show because she needed to “find herself” leaving Jason to raise their bitter teenage daughter, Brittany. Malik was out of alcohol and drug rehab and was in love with a model he met in rehab, and Tasha was now managing Derwin Davis’ career. Although the drama still remained prominent in the series it didn’t show any relevance to the characters. However, the one thing that remained consistent and strong was the true unconditional love between Derwin and Melanie, and how through their trials and tribulations they are still together.

Top 5 Job Fair Tips

2/3/2012

1- Dress business/ casual
Don't show up in jeans and a t-shirt.  You want to make your best impression and first impressions say a lot about a person. Be sure to dress comfortably but also nice.  Don't try to be someone you're not but also take style tips from people you admire.  Take a nice pair of black sacks, a cute top and cardigan or suit jacket and don't forget that portfolio!

2- Bring about 5-10 resumes
You never know when you will need extra resumes. Whether you spilled something on the one you brought, or more than one company needs a resume its better to be safe than sorry! However, make sure you don’t waste your resumes on companies you are not interested in, save the resumes for the companies you care most about. Don’t forget you can never go wrong with having more than what you need, so make sure you run by the library to print out extra copies!

3- Get straight to the point
Make sure you have a 30 sec to a minute speech prepared. Do not quote your speech word for word or you will sound like a robot by the third or fourth recruiter, however, use the speech as a guideline. Do not go off subject. This will help you be more comfortable. Remember the more comfortable you are the less worried you will be!
