5 Simple Fitness Tips to Motivate Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

Health and fitness are two goals that most people have. However, many of us don’t take the steps necessary to achieve our goals. While not everyone can spend every day in the gym or hours meal-prepping, there are many simple habits that can turn your fitness journey around and get you motivated. Check out these five simple steps to enhance your journey to better health!

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Water is essential for your body every single day. There are many opinions out there as to how much water is necessary to have each day. However, they are all linked to size, weight, and activity level. Aim each day to consume from half an ounce to a full ounce of water for each pound that you weigh. Not only does drinking water boost your energy, but it enhances skin health, boosts your immune system, prevents headaches, and so much more!

2. Find a Fitness Buddy

The only thing better than a great workout is a great workout with your best friend. Accountability is so much easier when you have someone motivating you each day. Find someone who has the same fitness and exercise goals as you, and someone who will push and motivate you without being discouraging.

3. Late-Night Sugar Cravings

After a long day of eating healthy and a good workout, it often feels as though we should “reward” ourselves with a treat. In addition, we often have those late-night cravings that are hard to fight. Although it is easier said than done, when you get those late-night sugar cravings, turn to fruit first. Fruit can curve your sweet tooth while staying on track for your healthy day.

4. Perfect Playlist

Nothing can make or break a workout like music. Everyone is different and has different songs or genres that get them motivated, but creating your own playlist will enhance your workout and your overall fitness journey. Whether it is some early 2000s throwbacks, a killer hip hop track, or a Taylor Swift mashup that gets you ready to workout, do what you’ve got to do in order to get your body moving and your workout to its highest potential.

5. Consistency is Key

One of the hardest parts about maintaining a healthy lifestyle is consistency. Oftentimes, we find ourselves pushing so hard one week that we burn out and lose all motivation. It is extremely important to find a fitness regime and a healthy diet that you are able to maintain. Setting unrealistic goals and expectations for yourself can do more harm than good. If you find yourself slacking on your fitness goals, don’t beat yourself up. The real test is getting yourself back on track after those “cheat days.”
