On August 31, Miley Cyrus fans noticed something was different: she removed her surname not only from her social media but also from her visual identity. The next day, the global phenomenon announced a new music album called Bass Persuades. Does it mean there is another era to come?
Well, as we wait for the music to drop, let’s recap Miley’s career. Hannah Montana was the beginning of her rise to fame; the character made her a star. But it didn’t stop there. She wanted to show the world her own identity, so she released her first album, Meet Miley Cyrus. That success marked the beginning of a long journey that doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.
TWENTY YEARS OF HANNAH MONTANA
Released in 2006, the Original Disney Channel Series, Hannah Montana, was celebrated with a special for its 20th anniversary. During the program, Miley sings the iconic songs “Best of Both Worlds” and “The Climb” from the TV show, as well as revisiting scenarios and meeting other celebrities, such as Selena Gomez, Chappell Roan, and Billy Ray Cyrus, her father.
The special episode was made to celebrate the enduring love fans still have for the character. Hannah Montana is considered one of the most popular shows in Disney Channel’s history. If you ever watched it, then you may know why. It’s impossible not to like the life of the pop star who hides her real identity from everybody. Each episode shows one day of her funny routine, living the best of both worlds.
But the show’s impact goes beyond the series itself. Even those who never watched the series know at least one song from the show. Also, Hannah Montana: The Movie is totally worth watching. Released in 2009, it tells the story of Miley Stewart returning to the place where she was born as fame starts to affect her.
THE BANGERZ ERA
2013 marks a major transition. Her fourth album, Bangerz, shows the end of the Disney teen star and the start of her adult identity.
Exploring themes of freedom, rebellion, running away from the past, and broken hearts, she moved away from pop to explore hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music. The new punk hairstyle, combined with her defiant behavior, was fuel for criticism.
On the internet, photos of her using drugs and appearing half-nakedhocked the old fans, who had an image of her as the Disney kid. Beyond all of that, it was the beginning of something that would become a distinctive part of her later sound: Reinke’s edema, which can cause a raspy vocal tone.
THE RECONCILIATION BETWEEN FATHER AND DAUGHTER
Billy Ray Cyrus is an important figure not only in Miley’s artistic trajectory but also in her life. Her dad was already a famous musician before starring alongside her on Hannah Montana, so this experience helped them have a very close relationship.
Nevertheless, in 2020, her parents divorced, and Miley and her father became estranged.
In 2025, Miley posted on Instagram: “My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my 30s, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing that bridges have been built and that time has brought a lot of healing.”
BASS PERSUADES: A NEW ERA TO BEGIN
As Miley Cyrus said in an interview for Wonderland magazine, Bass Persuades, which will be released on September 18 through Atlantic Records, covers topics related to love. Not only romantic love, but also self-love and all its different forms.
On her Instagram, she wrote: “Music takes hold of us. We feel it, sing it, sometimes dance to it, let it out and carry on. It is powerful, vulnerable, sweet, and strong. Heart full, heartache, every part of life in between. That’s what the title means to me.”
Fans are really excited about the news and see it as a new era for Miley. Apparently, the aesthetic seems to be adult, sexy, sophisticated, and predominantly red, giving the album a visual identity that is totally different from her last musical project, Something Beautiful, which explores themes of love, loss, vulnerability, and transformation.
