Tiny Daymakers: 5 Small Ways to Shake Up Your Routine and Brighten your Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

There are a lot of ways to make your day, but the ones we tend to think of off the top of our head take a lot of time. For example, seeing friends or traveling takes planning and effort. What if you don’t have that amount of time? Below are my top five less-than-10-minute daymakers for busy days.

Make your bed

Making your bed takes upwards of five minutes and it truly adds a positive light to your day. You’ll feel more refreshed, organized, and productive after making your bed. Plus, you don’t have to do it right after you wake up. Personally, I don’t end up making my bed until after breakfast or maybe even after lunch! It’s a very flexible task to put into your schedule somewhere and makes a huge difference in your mood.

Drink lemon water

Lemon water has a plethora of health benefits such as aiding digestion, helping clear skin, and adding vitamin C to your diet. If that’s not enough to convince you to add the beverage into your daily routine, remember that preparing it only takes two minutes! You can have it hot or cold, but I prefer iced lemon water to wake me up in the morning. Pour a large glass of water and squeeze as much lemon juice as you want into it before enjoying the refreshing drink. This quick, healthy habit can wake you and your body up on any groggy day and brighten your life that much more.

Make an upbeat playlist

Music is an amazing way to change your mood and channel your own happiness. Sitting down to make a playlist of all the songs that make you feel happy and bright is a perfect way to spend some time taking care of yourself. Plus, if you’re like me, you’ll have a blast coming up with a creative playlist title that fits the mood. The creation of the playlist is what takes a while, but on any day after that, you can just hit shuffle and enjoy! Make sure to play it loud and proud and let loose for a little.

Have a healthy snack

It’s always tempting to grab something quick and easy for a snack like chips, but you can make a lot of healthy snacks in very little time. For example, my favorite snack consists of only four ingredients: cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, avocado, and balsamic glaze. I chop the tomatoes, cheese, and avocado into bite size pieces, drizzle on the glaze, and enjoy! A lot of snacks like this take less than five minutes and will leave you feeling more energized than packaged foods.

Start a skincare routine

If you’re a student or you’re working, you spend a lot of time working on things besides yourself. Adding in a quick, 5-10 minute skincare routine can brighten your day and your skin. If you don’t have a lot of time, just put on a face mask while you do some homework or relax. Adding in any sort of cleanser, exfoliator, mask, or lotion to your day is a small step that’ll make you feel amazing.

I hope following some of my favorite tiny tips helps make your day that much better and brighter. It’s important to take care of yourself, especially on busy days, and put aside five minutes to complete something for yourself. Stay happy!
