James Stanell is your modern-day prince charming: he’s handsome, he’s romantic, and most importantly, he knows how treat a woman right. Just ask his girlfriend, the beautiful and lovely Marla Marquez. This DU brother proves that chivalry is not dead with his genuine personality and overall charm. When he’s not tearing it up on the football field, he’s usually saving lives as a campus EMT and jamming to Taylor Swift. Let’s meet this week’s Campus Cutie, James Stanell.

Name: James Stanell
Hometown: Coopersburg, Pennsylvania
Year: Junior
Major: Economics
Relationship status: Taken

On-Campus Activities: I’m the running back on the football team, a campus EMT, and a brother of Delta Upsilon

Favorite Movies: Miracle, 50 First Dates, Step Brothers (in no particular order)

When did you start playing football?
I started playing in second grade, which was actually late compared to all of my friends at the time.

What’s your favorite thing about the sport?
My favorite part about playing is my teammates and the bonds we share on and off the field.

What is your favorite Taylor Swift song?
While I am still huge a fan of her older songs (and constantly find myself shamelessly singing them), my current favorite song is, without a doubt, “I Knew You Were Trouble”

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
The ability to stop time, think about all the napping possibilities…

What is your idea of the perfect first date?
The place really depends on the girl, however a perfect first date for me definitely must include lunch (dinner is for couples and old people) and a fun activity (doesn’t matter what, as long as, #1 its fun, and #2 its not boring). I hate how people think first dates should be so formal and stereotypical (dinner and a movie), it makes the date a lot less personal than it should be!

What is your biggest turn-on in a girl?
A great smile.

What are some of your turn offs?
A big ego (there is a lot to be said for shy girls) and too much make-up.

First thing you notice about a girl?
Her eyes.

Ladies, meet this week’s campus cutie. We searched high and low for Exeter’s finest…and when we couldn’t find that, we settled for Lawrence Marsh. We think you’ll agree, he scrubs up pretty well! We sat him down for a good grilling over coffee, and his answers were cheesy, genuine and hilarious in equal measures. We hope you enjoy reading them!

Campus Cutie: Lawrence Marsh
Studying: Law
Relationship status: Taken
Activities involved in: Cricket and Snowsports
Hometown: Saltash, Cornwall

What do you look for in a girl?
“Someone who is willing to laugh out loud and doesn’t hide their emotions. Whilst looks do play a part, personality and comparability are far more important! I don’t have a particular type, but any girl who can catch my attention and is engaging is a winner.”

What would be your ideal first date?
“The activity doesn’t matter as long as it’s with the right person. Ideally, we’d do something to allow us to get to know each other better and is a bit different – something other than the standard and stereotypical date.”

If you were stranded on a desert island, what would be your three must haves?
“Bear Grylls, a boat and a map” – we like your logic!

What was the last song you listened to?
Sweet Nothing – Calvin Harris ft. Florence Welch

What would be a dealmaker in a relationship?
“When a girl is totally comfortable around me and accepts who I am.”

And a dealbreaker?
“Someone who isn’t genuine, and is too superficial”

What’s your proudest moment?
“Hearing two people in the space of one week ask – “Who do you think I am, Lawrence Marsh?!”

If you could visit one place in the world, where would you go?
“Somewhere spectacular. I’d like to climb a mountain, so let’s say Mount Everest!”

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
“Original, flamboyant and spontaneous”

One interesting fact about yourself:
“I can strawpedo a bottle of wine in 4 seconds”

Greek Life, CMU Grappling Club (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), Lunar Gala, Orientation Counselor, trying to start a CMU Wrestling Club

Hobbies: I like to draw, sing, read (when I have time), watch cartoons

One phrase comes to mind when describing this week’s HCBU campus cutie: “BU 500.”

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, allow me to explain: if you’re an extremely involved student here at BU, you belong in this category of the alleged “same 500 students” who participate actively in the BU community, whether that be through the Community Service Center, Student Activities Office, Center for Career Development, Educational Resource Center or club organizations.

But when it comes to Sua Morales, a junior majoring in PR and minoring in computer science, you might even think of him to be in the top ten percent of this group.

“I have a really deep conviction to help people,” he said, citing his participation in Boy Scouts and The Giving Tree as his influences.

“Service was always emphasized, and it was a concept my mom believed in as well,” Morales said. “I remember this one day, she made us go to as many neighbors as we could and offer to do chores, like throw their trash and wash their cars.”

As for The Giving Tree, the theme of selflessness has stayed with him throughout college, he said.

Before he applied to BU, Morales, of San Diego, Calif., admitted he didn’t know BU existed, but he wanted to explore the school, find out what its resources were and help people. And man, does he help people.

“Whatever it is, I was a member of it,” Morales said.

Freshman year, Morales worked at SAO’s Activities Information Desk on the second floor of the GSU, where he answered students’ quick inquiries. He said he loved those micro-interactions, because he could help people in just 15 seconds.

Morales also worked for the Mugar Undergraduate Greene Scholars, or MUGS for short, a group of students working for BU’s Mugar Library and managing its blogs called The UnCommon Discussion and new@BU.

“I love libraries, so I said, ‘Why not work for them?’ ” Morales said, who worked as a PR manager for new@BU.

That summer after his freshman year, Dean of Students Ken Elmore offered him a job to work in his office, after having breakfast with him.

“That was awesome. As a freshman, that was a dream come true,” he said, referring to Dean Elmore’s celeb status on campus.

So it comes as no surprise that Morales would occasionally attend Dean Elmore’s weekly Coffee and Conversation at the Howard Thurman Center.

But would Morales consider he and the Dean to be close friends?

“He’s my boy, for sure,” Morales laughed, adding that he has had dinner with him at the Dean’s house.

And that’s not all. During his sophomore year, Morales developed an interest in startup culture, with the goal of helping others through entrepreneurship. He helped organize Startup Weekend, where groups of six to seven students attempt to build a company in just 54 hours.

Of course, all this success did not come without obstacles. Morales admitted he did not always “see eye-to-eye with people.”

For instance, tickets to Startup Weekend cost $90, and he wanted to ensure money was not an issue for people who could not afford it.

After “heated discussions” with his teammates who didn’t think of ticket cost as a priority, Morales said he reached out to Stay in MA, a scholarship program for Massachusetts-based college student, and secured scholarship money.

Back on campus, Morales was involved in various club organizations, from more cultural ones like Phi Iota Alpha to political like Student Union.

Morales said he finally settled down with the Catholic Center, where he is on the Fundraising Committee to help raise funds for the center.

In the end, he realized his goal of making change by helping people would overrule all others.

For example, with the club he founded last year called The Oval Office, he hopes to help low-income families get the trees they want this Christmas by selling empty, unused parking lots to tree vendors, who then give tree certificates for low-income families.

Morales also co-founded the Delta Tau Delta fraternity here at BU, the founding of which he compares to that of a startup.

It’s yet another way to make an impact, he said.

But how does he balance it all? Morales’ secrets to success are Google Calendar and beginning every day at 6:30 every morning with a workout.

“It feels great – after the workout, that is – and gets you ready for the day,” he said.

But if waking up early doesn’t work for you, consider what you’ll be doing after graduation.

“Take your dream job, do you really see it being easier than college?” he said. “Learn to manage your time here, have fun and set your priorities.”

Morales is now a student ambassador for the CCD/ERC, where he gives weekly presentations for its various workshops, ranging from face-to-face networking to test prep.

“Older friends told me I would only get to pick two between sleep, a social life or good grades,” he said. “Pick what matters most to you.”

Name: Gabriel Renaud
Nicknames: Gab, Gaber
Class year: 2016
Hometown: Quebec City, Canada
Major: Undecided (but Chris Fenwick is asking his advisor for me)
Campus activities: Golden Hours, Hockey time, Slapshot Regatta, Moulton Dinners, ESL courses, and Baxter Basement
Relationship status: Single and Actively Seeking
Preferred relationship status: Actively Not-Seeking

What do you like or not like about living in America vs. living in Canada?
I like that in Canada we have good Tim Hortons. I like to legally be able to walk into a bar and purchase any Molson product I desire. I enjoy Quebec maple syrup candy as it really activates my taste buds and you can eat more than one without feeling nauseous. I like that in Canada, we can play outdoor hockey from November to March on natural frozen ice. What I don’t like about Canada is our College/University system. I like lots of things here as well, but I think it is partly due, to the fact that we are in Maine, and it is highly similar to Canada. I also like most American people as I think they are friendly, generous and optimistic about life. I end by saying the American dream is quite like living the dream in ice hockey.

What was your first pet (name and type)?
Her name was “baby girl”

If you could invite any 3 people living or dead to a dinner party who would you invite and why?
The living legend himself, Lance Armstrong! I’d like to eat dinner across from Connor Shannon during Golden Hours, and probably Borat – to have someone speak my language!

What is your favorite movie?
Monsters INC. is probably my favorite movie because I connected on an emotional level with “Sulley” during his struggles throughout the performance.

As a hockey player are you upset that you always have to eat in Moulton? Do you ever eat at Thorne? Do you ever want to?
I would like to eat at Thorne if I had the opportunity to take a girl out on a date. Only, if I had that chance, would I go to Thorne. Also, I don’t have to eat at Moulton. I choose to eat at Moulton because it builds team camaraderie heading into a very important season. Eating at Moulton with my friends and teammates allows me to slow down from the stressful days of school, workouts, hockey, and homework. It’s a time where we can build chemistry together that hopefully will carry over onto the ice. Tradition and team building is vital for success and I think chemistry building such as eating at Moulton is a strong reason why the team recently won the NESCAC championship. I hope by eating meals with my team I can contribute to a healthy locker room environment as we work our way toward a NESCAC and National Championship.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
In Quebec, I ate fried possum one time. It was the last time I did, as a small case of food poisoning broke out amongst my fellow campers.

What have you accomplished that you are most proud of?
Definitely leaving home, learning English and being in the position I am now. I will never regret this decision.

What are the differences between Canadian and American girls?
I wish that with American girls, we (guys) did not have to always make the first move. Canadians girls are more wild and crazy in general. I hope American girls, especially those at my current college – Bowdoin, will someday emulate the Canadian girls.

Most embarrassing moment?
All of my embarrassing moments are not very appropriate to say in this context.

What do you do if you’re trying to get a girl to notice you/impress her?
I tend to play to my strengths and avoid my weaknesses. My strengths include speaking French and my weaknesses include speaking English. I’m also a slam poet. So many times I will speak slam poetry to American girls in French. The things they do later blow my mind.

What do you look for in a girl?
I am attracted to girls with a strong personality, who speak multiple languages, and with a freaky side. That is to say I’m not into the “cold fish” thing.

What is your ideal date activity?
My ideal date activity would be listening to Endless Love in the dark while playing slap-shot regatta.

Fun fact:
Henry Mcnamara and I will be voting for president Obama in the upcoming election.

Patrick Gallagher Landes was first spotted performing in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as “William Barfé”- a nasally nerd with a touchy personality and peanut allergy. Contrary to his role in the musical though, this week’s campus cutie is down to earth, musically-inclined and has a great sense of humour. Let’s see what this cute (and single!) freshman has to say…

Hometown: Harrisonburg, VA
Year: 2016
Dorm: Larrabee
Relationship Status: Single

What are you most Involved in at Conn?
For the past few months it’s been theater, but I hope to get more involved with activism (like 1 in 4), music, and Ultimate Frisbee.

People were really impressed with your performance in the spelling bee. How did you get into acting?
I don’t remember “getting into” acting, it’s just something that’s always been there for me. I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember. My parents tell me that they knew I was an actor when we would make funny faces at each other in the bathroom mirror when I was little.

Favorite movie, book, and musical artist?
SLC Punk, Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, and this one changes a lot, but at the moment, it’s a band called Yes.

Describe yourself in three words: Musical, compassionate, relaxed.

What is your most embarrassing moment?
Oh geez… Well since you asked, here it is: It was probably at camp when we sitting around the fire and I was not really listening to the guest speaker. Instead, I was thinking about how badly I had to fart. So the speaker went on, and on, and on, and at just the right moment, when there was a short break in her speech, I ripped a loud and long one. The place erupted with laughter.

What is your favorite class so far?
Probably my Intro to Sociology class. The professor is charismatic and the work is interesting.

What is your dream job?
The elusive well paying part-time actor, part-time musician, part time counselor job.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I really want to go back to the area in Switzerland where I went to boarding school. Lugano is the perfect mix of mountainous and aquatic scenery and Mediterranean climate.

What qualities do you value most in a girl?
Kindness, compassion, a nice smile, and the willingness to give me random back massages (my favorite things ever!)

Turn off/deal breaker: Rudeness.

Pet Peeve: People standing in doorways.

Motto: “You can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind.”

How do you feel about being this week’s Campus Cutie?
I’m really flattered and surprised. I usually fly under the radar for these types of things.

What are your hobbies?
I spend most of my time outside. Sports are a major part of my life; I paddle out to surf any chance that I get, and I go hiking on the Appalachian Trial a couple times a year.

What are your favorite things to do/places to go in Orlando?
I don’t really have anything specific. I’m pretty much open to everything but I do like going to shows downtown at The Social and Back Booth. I really like the vibe downtown both in the day and at night.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I definitely hope to have my own physical therapy practice by then and a wife at least, but maybe a kid or two. Hopefully I’m living on the beach somewhere.

How would your friends describe you?
I think they would describe me as loyal, genuine, spontaneous, and determined.

What’s your favorite band/artist and why?
Man, it’s hard to just pick one but I guess I’ll say Mumford and Sons since they just released their new album. But I love the passion and depth in both their sound and their lyrics.

Who’s your celebrity crush and why?
It’s probably Zooey Deschanel. She cute, funny and weird, and I like it!

Describe the perfect girl:
Someone who is comfortable with their self, stands by their beliefs and faith in God, and is just not afraid to be different or go against “the grain” a little.

Describe an ideal date:
I would say it would be one that starts and ends at the beach. Just enjoying each other, not worrying about time or anybody around us, not having anything specific planned…just “be” with each other and enjoy whatever happens.

What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever done for a girl?
For the girl I last dated, I wrote her a list of 100 reasons why I’m crazy for her. It was from the heart, made with my own hands, and I was pretty proud of it. Ha.

I had no idea that my interview with the University of Illinois Student Body President would be so much fun. My assumption was that he would be very serious and “down to business,” but this was not the case; at heart he’s a laid back student just like we the rest of us aim to be. Brock Gebhardt’s warm brown eyes and smile set the tone for our Campus Celebrity interview last Monday morning. This Peoria native, dressed in a conservative gray sweater and corduroys, is our campus’s student body president. His one year term began in April of this year, and coincidentally, inauguration day doubled as his 21st birthday! Brock is a senior, double majoring in Economics and Political Science. You can catch Brock Gebhardt in action every Wednesday during student government meetings at seven p.m. in the Illini Union Pine Lounge. In addition to the major role he plays in student affairs, Brock is also a member of multiple committees and organizations, including the executive organization of Big Ten students and Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity.

Her Campus: How did you react when you were first asked to be a Campus Celebrity for HC Illinois?
Brock Gebhardt: I was really excited! I like any opportunity to connect with the campus and the student body in a different way.

HC: What made you decide to run for Student Body President?
BG:
I wanted to hear about the issues on campus, be an influence on what happens and help give the students a voice.

HC: What was the campaign like for you?
BG:
Months and months of work, but it was a real learning experience. I really learned a lot about recruiting people and communicating my position if I won the election. I made websites, graphs and charts, while also talking to dozens of people. I had more cups of coffee than I care to remember. But I made an effort to talk to the senators and show them I had honest reasons for running.

HC: How has your term been so far?
BG:
Absolutely amazing. There have been trials and tribulations, internal disagreements and strife with graduate students and trying to find a good structure of representation, but we have recently resolved all of those problems. This is great because now we can refocus our energies towards more external matters.

HC: What have you learned since being in office?
BG:
A lot about how organizations are run. I’ve also learned about motivating individuals and interpersonal relationships, which is connected to how to communicate more effectively. You learn how to get everyone to work together and to get things accomplished, especially since no one is getting paid to do any of this — it takes a certain touch to get everyone moving in the right direction. I’ve learned who to talk to and who’s connected to the right people in order to get things done. But one of the most important things I’ve learned has been public speaking, more specifically, speaking in front of an unruly crowd.

HC: What does the Student Body President do for fun?
BG:
I love to read, especially the newspaper and novels. I’m also a pilot; I fly small single engine planes here at school and back home. I love to travel, which I haven’t gotten a chance to do much of lately, but I’ve been to almost all of the states. Over the summer I was flown to Israel by the Israeli Consulate in Chicago. They took us sightseeing all over Israel. It was really amazing. Here on campus my favorite thing to do is probably go out. I really like to go to Joe’s; it has great, cheap food and dancing. What more can a college student ask for?

HC: How does Student Body President affect your overall college experience?
BG:
Now that I’m Student Body President, I’m connected to the University forever. This school means a lot to me. My dad went here, as well as my great uncle. This is a commonality that I have with people who are really important to me, and being the Student Body President strengthens that bond.

HC: How do you feel about the Illini Football team this season?
BG:
I think we put up a good fight. We were worried that we’d be weak from the start, but we came out strong. I’m optimistic about the rest of the season.

Fun Facts about Brock:
-Brock love to ride his motorcycle. He has a Suzuki GS 500 sport bike.
-One of his favorite books is The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith.
-Two of his favorite TV shows are “The West Wing” and “How I Met Your Mother.”
-His Hollywood crush is Mila Kunis. “She’s gorgeous, she’s a good actress and I really liked ‘That ’70s show.’ Not to mention, she’s funny. But mainly she’s drop dead gorgeous — my celeb crush is somewhere between her and Megan Fox.”
-His favorite artist of the moment is Bob Dylan
-The things he loves most about the University of Illinois are the students, the diversity and so many different personalities and backgrounds. There are so many people here to learn from.

On campus, I am a crew member of the Texas Student Television show Local Live. Off campus I am an active member of the Austin film industry.

Harry Potter, Twilight or The Hunger Games?
Is it horrible that i havn’t seen any of these?

Name one thing that most people don’t expect from you when they see you:
Most people I meet are surprised when I reveal to them I have a cat. He is a badass.

What are your plans after graduation?
In a perfect world, I would like to make my way to be a documentary filmmaker. In all likelihood i will probably start small working on film crews or writing/taking photos for a publication.

ACL or SXSW? And why?
Don’t get me wrong, ACL is awesome. But SXSW is great because you really have a chance to discover new music and move around the city.

What’s your favorite food trailer in Austin?
Roppolos no doubt. I love NY style pizza.

Who is/are your journalism heroes?
I am a big fan of photojournalist W. Eugene Smith particularly because of his strong commitment to depicting an honest portrayal of everyday normal people. I also have a lot of respect for war photojournalist and film maker, Tim Hetherington. He was known for his bravery and camaraderie. I had the opportunity to meet him before he was killed while on assignment in Lybia.

Where do you get inspiration?
I’ve always been the type that has something to prove. Nothing motivates me more than someone who doubts me.

HC: What’s your favorite part about being a Husker?
Pat:
I like being close to home, and going back to get a good meal.

HC: What do you like to do in your free time? Any hobbies/interests?
Pat:
I play basketball, and watch a lot of Netflix…a lot.

HC: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go…and why?
Pat:
Australia, because I like their goofy accents…and kangaroos.

HC: What’s your worst fear?
Pat:
Drowning. When I was 3, during swim lessons, the instructor took a kid all the way down to the end of the pool, so I wanted to do the same…but by myself. I thought I’d be cool and just jump in, but it ended up not working so well and some fully dressed parent had to save me. I’ve been terrified ever since, even though I worked as a life guard. Ironic.

HC: Describe your dream girl.
Pat:
Well, she has to be able to hold a conversation. Looks aren’t that important, but I mean…I have to be attracted to her. I like girls who have a good sense of humor, but are girly girls—girls who take care of themselves, but who aren’t high maintenance.

HC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Pat:
I’d like to be out of Nebraska, living somewhere in the West, with a wife and kids probably. I’d like to have a job in my field too, particularly working for Kiewit.

HC: If you could change something about yourself, would you? And what would it be?
Pat:
My ugly face and my extreme case of awkwardness.

HC: Halloween is coming up shortly! Any costumes planned?
Pat:
I’m thinking either a Disney movie character or my roommates and I might be some of the cast of Zoolander.

HC: Any other interesting facts we should know about you?
Pat:
I told you, I’m not very interesting.

Okay, think fast!

Back to my 20th birthday at Devines. Probably my best night at Duke.
