Boston Strong

4/21/2013

This has been one of the toughest weeks for America I have seen in my lifetime.  Between the tragedy in Texas and the events that took the world by storm in Boston.  I wanted to take the time this week to express Her Campus Rochester's support and love for our Her Campus branches in Boston, and also extend our thoughts to the families of the victims in Boston.  Being from the East coast this tragedy hit me personally hard.  I have multiple friends and family members that call Boston their home, and it is one of my favorite cities in the world.  I will not recap events because we all know what happened, and I will not repeat the names of the bombers because they don't deserve the recognition.  However I do want to remind everyone reading this to keep these people in your thoughts when you think about the events of this past week.

Also, to the countless others effected and victimized by the horrendous actions.

We have seen our country and our world come together at a time that it needed to most, and I hope we each appreciate things a little more today than we did yesterday...

Best Blazers and Jeans for Fall

11/5/2012

By Farrell Cooke

Summer has quickly passed us by which means its finally time to break out the sweaters, scarves, and boots.  Fall is all about comfy and cozy fashion, but to prevent dressing too comfortably in all those layers, I have a little guide to give a look into two of the biggest trends this fall!

Blazers and Jeans are two pieces that almost every girl has in her closet.  Aside from being versatile and comfortable they are essential items for Fall.  They can be layered, accessorized and fun to play around with different looks.

Blazers are great no matter what outfit you pair it with or where you are going.  The blazers that you can throw on without even thinking about it are the best ones.  For a day of classes, work, an interview, or night out they are perfect for keeping handy in the closet.  If you want to take a risk, wear a bright blazer on top of a simple outfit, keep it classy with a tuxedo style for added sophistication, or keep it polished and comfortable in a boyfriend style.  Versatility is a blazers strong point; take advantage of it.

One thing I have come to notice in my time in college is that jeans are the go-to comfort pants when it comes to collegiate fashion.  Lets take this trend to the next level. Colored Denim.

Plum, maroon, teal, and red are a few colors that are coming back for Fall.  If you are willing to take a risk, try some patterned shirts with your pants, as long as the colors coordinate, chic and fashion forward will be your middle name.

Or you can always match any color with a simple top (with a blazer?!) and you are good to go get on with your day in the trendiest of ways.  J Brand, Sold, Rag/Bone, and Free People are a few places that carry great colored jeans.

Lilac Festival

5/13/2012

Senior week is full of fun events UR has planned out, but it also conveniently it also coincides with one of the cities best festivals. The Lilac Festival is one of the most well known events Rochester has to offer as people come from near and far to take part in the festivities. Upon arrival you walk into dozens of set up shops selling everything from soap, to jewelry, to clothing. As you continue to walk through the shops you run into a more open area full of food and drinks. The food surprisingly was great. It is everything you would expect at a carnival, but better. There is fried dough, chicken fingers, garbage plates, popcorn and that’s only to name a few. The beer tent offers great selections for a consistent five-dollar price. There was a band and lots of people in the concert area dancing and enjoying the live music. On the other side of the park are the famous lilacs. This was the only disappointing part of the festival. Going to the festival as a kid I was expecting the huge display the festival is named after, instead you will find that all the Lilacs bloomed early due to the nice weather, however there are some other flowers still pretty all the same that are nice to check out. What you are really there for though is the food, shopping, and the experience. Rochester has a lot of things to offer so close to campus that aren’t taken advantage of, but the Lilac festival is definitely one of the things to consider attending. After a senior night or even senior ball the festival offers the perfect cure of fried food and fresh air. The end of the year is flying by and the Lilac festival is definitely an event that you shouldn’t miss!

River Footbridge: Linking the 19th ward to Phase

4/21/2012

As we have all seen over the past couple months the new building in between Towers isn’t the only construction going on around this side of campus.  Trucks and construction workers have also been surrounding the area, building a footbridge.  The bridge is being built as part of the plan to revitalize the riverfront.  The engineer in charge of the project, Thomas Hack said, “I think you’d be amazed at how quickly you can get to the downtown through this trail system…It’s a direct line into the heart of Rochester.”
