Little Wins to Keep You Positive During Midterms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Midterms are tough; when you’re in this month of insane stress, it’s easy to feel like your life is a mess. Don’t let yourself get too trapped in that negativity! There are plenty of good things to still focus on and to remind you of how great you’re doing. Here’s a list of small accomplishments that’ll keep you going. Positive thoughts, people! We’re rooting for you!

Getting Out of Bed
You mean you only hit snooze three times instead of four times this morning? Go you!

Making it to Class on Time

To be honest, some days making it to class at all would be award-worthy.

Leaving Your Apartment and NOT Going to Campus

A change of scenery is definitely something to celebrate, even if it’s just a new study spot.

Remembering to Eat

I get it, essays have taken over your lunch break. When you do manage to eat all three meals? Standing ovation.

Getting a Good Work Out

Get those endorphins pumping!

Finishing a Reading

Whether it’s your third or your thirtieth (and whether you have three or 30 left), it’s worth at least a few seconds of a mental victory dance.

Keeping Your Room Clean
The Chair” is the worst enemy in this high-stress time. Bravo for keeping a handle on it — or making the time to get a handle on it!

Taking a Long Shower
DRY SHAMPOO ONLY GOES SO FAR. For bonus points: shave your legs and relish the fabulous feeling of your silky-smooth skin.

Cooking a Real Meal

Food is hard, which just makes a proper meal taste even better.

Taking a Break

You deserve to pause for a sec, so props to you when you actually manage to squeeze it in!

Crossing Something Off Your To-Do List

No matter how small it is, the best feeling is having it done with.

De-Stressing (or Stressing) with Friends

Studying will easily take up your whole life. It’s definitely a win if you find time to see some friends in this chaos, even if it’s just to vent together.

Dressing Like a Functioning Human

It’s way too easy to just roll out in a pair of sweats and a messy bun. Looking decent and feeling good takes effort — and effort gets an A+.

Grabbing Groceries

You can’t eat if you have nothing to eat, but it’s also super impressive that you found the time!

Finding a New Favourite Playlist or Song

Sure, you’ll probably be sick of it by the time you stop listening on repeat to this as your soundtrack of stress, but hey! Something good came out of all the working. I consider that a victory.

Alas, midterms wait for no woman, but at least you’ll have some little wins to keep you positive this season. To remind you of how amazing you’re doing, here’s a crowd of strangers cheering you on!

Brittney Payer

Wilfrid Laurier '19

Brittney is a fourth year History and Medieval Studies Major with minors in English and Spanish - so, basically, she's a massive nerd who does research for fun and is totally fine with that! She loves reading trashy romance novels and not-so-trashy fantasy novels, attempting to write short stories (likely also romances, trashy level TBD), researching obscure folklore, and belting out to her favourite broadway tunes. When not writing for Her Campus, you'll probably find her bingeing some new telenovela or joining yet another campus club!
