As the weather gets colder, the less likely we are to want to go outside for a run or to go on a hot-girl walk. In order to stay fit, many of us sign up for a gym membership. Walking into a gym, especially if it is your first time, can be intimidating: large men grunting, wanna-be fitness influencers wearing outfits too-cute to sweat in, and large machines that look impossible to maneuver. It can all be so overwhelming, but going into it with the right mindset can be a game changer and help you face gym-anxiety! Here are four tips that have helped me with gym anxiety!
1. “fake it till you make it” with confidence
At the start of my fitness journey, I had major anxiety every time I stepped foot into the gym. There was so many abnormally buff people that looked like seasoned pros at the gym. Even though those people can be intimidating, you have to remember that they aren’t paying attention to you and that they had to start somewhere too. Everyone at the gym is there for a common goal: get fit. They are not worried about the person next to them since they are focused on their own workout. So, walk in and do your thing! Getting a few cute gym outfits that you feel confident in can also help. If you look like a boss, you feel like a boss. If you feel like a boss, you are a boss! Always walk with confidence and it will soon follow in your attitude!
2. have a gym buddy
Going to the gym with a friend is always fun. It allows you have someone to talk to and explore the gym with. Another great thing about having a workout buddy is that you can hold each other accountable and socialize in a healthy setting. It’s so rewarding seeing someone you care about make progress alongside yourself; every time I go to the gym with friends, we always reward ourselves with a yummy recovery meal after!
3. A fire playlist
Having a good gym playlist is key. Music is a huge motivator for me; it helps me get through a tough workout and pretty much just life in general. Build a playlist with all of your faves and get lost in the music. My current go-to song in the gym is “Fight Night” by the Migos.
4.Go in with a plan
Before you step foot in the gym, it is always helpful to figure out what you want to hit for that day. Looking up different types of workouts via the internet or social media is super helpful with getting you acquainted with equipment and ways to make your gym session super efficient. For example, I always write every workout I want to follow in my notes app on my phone. Knowing what you want to do for your workout helps you waste less time and makes you look like you know what you are doing!Â
Yes, the gym can be scary for the first time, but it is a great tool to stay fit in the colder months. Making it a part of your routine is great. You can get so much out of going to the gym consistently; it is so rewarding seeing your progress over time. After a while, it becomes second nature and can become a relaxing and fun part of your daily routine! Remember, everyone starts somewhere and going to the gym is a step in the right direction that deserves to be celebrated.
