How to Feel Confident in the Weight Section of the Gym

If you’ve ever walked into the weight section of the gym and have been stared at by protein-filled bodybuilders so excessively that you had to double check to make sure you remembered to put pants on that day, you’re not alone. It can be very difficult to do your thing in the gym when you not only feel the eyes of the men around you, but you also feel their judgment. While some men are actually trying to be helpful when they correct your form, it can also feel like they’re giving you another reminder that they think you shouldn’t be there. Nobody should ever have to feel uncomfortable while they’re at the squat rack or doing deadlifts; the gym should be where you can go to let loose and get rid of the stress of  your everyday life. If you’re brand-spanking new to the gym, or if you’ve just had it with feeling insecure while getting your sweat on, here’s a list of things to make you feel more confident.

Wear Something that YOU are Comfortable In

If you feel like a 10/10 in a pair of Lululemons and a tank top, you do you, girl. If you’re more of a spandex and t-shirt type of person, go for it! Whatever you choose to wear, make sure YOU like how your booty is poppin’ or how amazing your arms look. And make sure that it’s easy to move in. There’s nothing worse than going to the gym and realizing mid squat that your shorts are creeping up a little too close for comfort…

Do Your Research Ahead of Time

The gym has so many different pieces of equipment and most of them look like torture machines, so make sure you look up online how to use them. It’s also super important to make sure you have the right form while working out to prevent injuries. Try watching videos on YouTube or Instagram where they demonstrate the workouts step-by-step. It may even help to practice the motions at home so when you try it in the gym, you’ll look like a pro.

Plan Out Your Workout Before You Go to the Gym

It’s always awkward when you’re walking around the gym thinking, “What the heck should I do now?” Make sure you write down in a notebook or on your phone every single thing you’re going to do at the gym to avoid any panic.

Create a Playlist of Your Personal Anthems

“Single Ladies” has been on my workout playlist since Beyoncé blessed us with creating that masterpiece. This song makes me feel like I’m the fiercest diva on this planet. Find your motivation songs and blast them in your headphones. This will help you get into your own personal workout bubble and distract yourself from the people around you.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

I’ve been there. I completely understand how awkward/embarrassing/crappy it is to not know how to adjust a machine and to be fidgeting with it for what seems like hours. Try to find either a trainer or a staff member there to see if they can help, or try to find someone who is resting in between their sets to lend a hand. Just remember that everyone has to start somewhere, even the people whose biceps are as big as your legs. They definitely weren’t born with huge masses of muscles, so they, at one point, had no clue how to adjust a machine either.

Bring a Friend!

Being with another person can be a HECK of a lot less intimidating. There’s always comfort in numbers, so ask your BFF if she’s down to be your sweat sister. Friends who lift together, stay together.

If it Fits with Your Schedule, Try to go During Less Busy Times of the Day

The peak times of day at the gym are typically between 7-8 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., so try to go during the slower times. There will be fewer people, so it’ll give you more personal space and less people around watching. You’ll be able to bench press in peace!

And finally,

You Have a Legit Reason to be in the Gym

Remember your goals throughout your workout and know that you have the same right to be there as every single other person there. While you should still use proper gym etiquette, like letting people use your machine in between sets, don’t let them intimidate you. Stand your ground because you are a woman warrior! You go make those gainz, girl!!
