5 Ways to Exercise Without Ever Stepping Foot in the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Getting fit is something that many of us aspire to do. But sometimes those ambitions never go beyond writing “work out” on a New Year’s Resolution list or following fitness accounts on social media for inspiration. Whether you have a busy schedule or gymtimidation, getting yourself to the gym can be tough. Here are some ways to get your sweat on without ever stepping foot in the gym.

1. Rock Climbing

If you’re the adventurous type, Tallahassee Rock Gym is the place for you. Climbing can be much more entertaining than going to the gym. Don’t worry, you don’t need experience; they offer an intro class that will have you climbing in under an hour. All you need is a positive attitude and a waiver. They offer group rates, too, so grab some friends and get climbing!

2. Yoga

Instagram makes yoga look like an easy, relaxing practice. However, I found it to be surprisingly rigorous, making me work up a good sweat. Instead of going to the gym and working on one part of your body at a time, yoga allows you to use it all at once. It’s also a great way to keep both your body and your mind healthy. The Tallahassee Buddhist Community in Railroad Square offers classes throughout the week, with all levels welcome.

3. Pole Classes

Pole dancing gets a bad rap, but it actually requires a lot of strength and flexibility. Queen of Hearts Fitness offers pole classes for all levels, and many classes are exclusively women. This is a great way to break out of your comfort zone and learn to feel confident in your body, all while burning calories!

4. Ultimate Frisbee

If you’re looking for something a little more team-oriented, Ultimate is your game. The strength and endurance it takes to sprint across the field and the fearlessness to dive for the disc are just a few of the things you’ll learn while playing this sport. However, this timeless game will seem more like fun than exercise. FSU Campus Recreation has an IM team that plays every spring. Plus, it’s free for students!

5. Walking/Biking to Class

FSU’s campus is covered in hills (looking at you, Mt. Diffenbaugh). Climbing those hills with a backpack full of books is the easiest way to burn calories without even realizing it. Walking or biking to class and around campus is sure to have your calves looking great by the end of the semester.

With such a variety of options, there’s no excuse to not exercise. Whether you prefer something adventurous (rock climbing, pole classes, etc.) or something that can easily fit into your schedule (walking to class), getting healthy and fit is something everyone can do!
