Get (And Stay) Motivated to Go to the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Between classes, clubs and studying it can be hard to find time to fit in workouts! The busy schedule of a college student makes it challenging to prioritize physical fitness, which is why getting into a routine is key to staying in shape!

In addition to staying fit, regular exercise can help you clear your head and have stronger focus later when it is time to sit down and do schoolwork. So while it can be difficult to make your way to the gym on days when the weather isn’t so great or when you’ve had a busy day of classes, you’ll be thanking yourself later for taking care of your body and mind! Luckily, there are some tricks that can help you combat any sluggish mood that might prevent you from fitting in a workout.

1. Find a Gym Buddy

It can be super motivating to have someone by your side at the gym. You can cheer each other on and share your favorite workouts with each other, who knows what great exercises you’re missing? With a partner to push you to workout, you’re going to be more likely to stick to your commitment and get in more exercise than you would alone!

2. Mix it Up

Getting in shape is not about being comfortable! Doing the same exercises over and over again will cause you to get bored of your routine quickly. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new every time you workout! Maybe you’ve never tried a certain machine or want to check out a unique class you’ve heard of, why not go for it? New experiences will keep you engaged, motivated and you just might find your new favorite workout.

3. Find Cute Gym Clothes

There are so many options available for workout clothes! Finding something you feel comfortable and confident in can help change your mindset about exercising. The gym can be a perfect place to rock your new leggings or sneakers, and having new clothes to wear can be great motivation to pause Netflix and burn some calories.

4. Set Goals

Create small, realistic goals about what you want to achieve through your workouts. By having something to work towards, you’ll keep pushing until you achieve it! Each time you reach your goal, reward yourself and then set a new one! As you progress through your goals, you’ll accomplish more than you thought was possible!
