Savour the Silence

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is easy to neglect the importance of silence. As college students, we are constantly surrounded by noise. I am someone who, before college, did not appreciate the silence, in fact I quite hated the silence.

To me silence meant loneliness. It meant the absence of voices, the absence of people in my life. I was and still am a very extroverted person, so I constantly love to be surrounded by people. So, when it was silent, I always thought something was wrong.

In college, while I have excellent friends that I surround myself with, I have begun to get more accustomed to the silence that fills my everyday life. As I have felt more and more comfortable with silence I have learned a few things.

Firstly, silence can be a beautiful thing. This is a time to reflect and focus on the positive things going on in your life. I think that it is a very important thing to maintain a positive attitude. To help you do this, take some time in silence and reflect on the things that went well throughout the day or in the past.

Another thing I learned is that the absence of voices does not mean that there is something wrong with you or anyone around you. Silence is important to everyone. In that, each person needs their own amount of silence and decompression for them to face the day.

Lastly, there is a saying that goes “begin every day with a grateful heart.” This is something I have also started to do in a time of silence. I either write or think of a list of things in my life to be grateful for. This can be anything from friends to that crunchy leaf you walked on today. This helps start each day on the right foot. It just might surprise you how long this list can be.

There is much more that you can do to savour the silence in your life. These are just three things that I have grown to enjoy doing, but I encourage you to start turning the silence into a positive and uplifting time for you.
