7 Ways to De-stress the Mind and Body

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Stress is our body’s natural response to a demand or threat. The responsibilities and awaiting tasks can cause us distress. Unfortunately, stress is easily induced and often comes with its unwanted side effects. We all respond to stress differently. We may find ourselves reaching for another cookie from the pantry, with little demon zits forming on our faces, or find ourselves having a very adult tantrum. Stress goes hand-in-hand with the overthinking and worrying we do that keeps our minds awake at night. Here are a few ways to de-stress your mind and your body when you find yourself needing to slow down and take a breather!

1. Meditation is good for the mind and soul

It can help clear your mind and relax your body. For iPhone users, check out the podcast app that comes with your phone! Search “Meditation” and you will find all sorts of podcasts to listen to (my favorite is The Meditation Podcast by Jesse and Jeane Stern). The best part about the podcast app is that you can set a timer so it can automatically stop after a certain time in case you fall asleep! If you do not have access to this app, go to your playstore or app store and simply search for meditation apps. If all else fails, go to YouTube and search for meditation videos.

2. Diffuse essential oils

Look into purchasing an essential oil diffuser. There are so many benefits to the natural remedies of essential oils, especially health benefits. Different oils contain different advantages. If you need more energy or to feel revitalized, try diffusing peppermint! If you have trouble falling asleep at night, try lavender oil. Essential oils can also be mixed together to create blends. All the information you need to know about this natural practice can be found with simple research online!

3. Sleepy spray

Bringing lavender back into mind, this scent is found in many mists that can be sprayed on your pillow and bedding before you hit the hay. Bath and Body Works carries many aromatherapy products. However, a cheaper alternative would be by Febreeze. They have a “Sleep Serenity” line that contains bedding refreshers in lavender scents. You could also DIY a pillow mist spray by combining lavender essential oils, other essential oils and water. It can be personalized! Doing it yourself with essential oils is probably the safer and non-chemical alternative.

4. Keeping a journal

Writing in a journal can help you get your thoughts out. Keep one by your bed so you can jot down stuff before you fall asleep. You can write about one good thing that happened that day or simply write about anything. It’s vital to stay positive in your journal. You could write about negative things to get your thoughts out, but when you go back to read it, it’s always nice to read about something positive. Try writing encouraging quotes you heard or found. It’s motivational and will help you focus on getting through what you are going through.

5. Take a bath

Turn on that water, let it flow, add your favorite bubble bath soap and some Epsom salts. Turn on your chill playlist, light some candles and grab some wine. You’ll be there for a while. There are so many aromatherapy bubble bath soaps that are sold. A personal favorite is the Dr. Teal’s brand, and it can be found in local stores. It’s around five dollars. Also, Epsom salts contain health benefits, look it up! At Dollar Tree, you can find eucalyptus or lavender scented Epsom salts. Best part is that it’s only a dollar. Can’t beat that!

6. Reading before bed

Reading in bed before you fall asleep can help slow down the mind and naturally help you become sleepy. Often, we are so caught up in the day that we might not have free time to enjoy a good read. Is there a book you have always wanted to take on? Well, I say go for it and take that precious time to embark on an imaginary journey! Remember this quote by Joseph Addison, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”

7.  Exercise and take on yoga

Exercise is so important. It keeps you healthy, but it can also help you relax and feel more tired at the end of the night. Exercise releases endorphins that trigger a positive feeling in your body. It’s a great way to start your day! Yoga is a tactic that can help improve flexibility, respiration, energy and vitality. There are so many yoga videos on YouTube and many books to help guide you to a positive mind. There are also many yoga moves that can help prepare you for a good night’s rest. Try searching on Pinterest! There are so many pins about yoga moves to help you fall asleep.

So, if you are feeling stressed and need ways to help you achieve relaxation, try some of these tips!
