Outstanding Journalism Senior: Rachel Swalin

4/7/2013

When did you decide on journalism as your career path?

I always seemed to have a thing for writing and English in high school. After reading my first Seventeen magazine at 12, I just fell in love with the idea of writing articles that would impact people's lives, especially women. That's when I realized I could apply my passion to a career in journalism.

Why did you choose OU?
It's actually funny because I never thought I would go to school in Ohio. Originally, I wanted to go to school somewhere in a big city, like New York. But then I learned about the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and discovered the school offered classes specifically focused on magazines, which I knew was the field I wanted to go into. I also just fell in love with the campus after visiting (which being that my visit was in December when it was snowing, that was pretty miraculous).

Rachel Bailey: CMT Radio Intern

2/2/2013

How did you hear about the internship and what was the application process like?

I applied to a bunch of different internships, including E! News, CMT, MTV, Comedy Central among others in February. I didn’t expect to hear anything back from any of them – I was just kind of messing around. In June, CMT e-mailed me back and said they had received and reviewed my application and would let me know by the end of the month if I would receive an interview. I was thrilled that they even contacted me back, and still did not expect to receive an interview. With two days left of June, CMT e-mailed me and asked to set up a phone interview for the following day. I interviewed with the head of the Radio department and the producer of CMT Radio Live, and the next day they officially offered me the internship.

What was a typical day like at your job?

I would arrive at work at 10 am along with the Assistant Producer. We would research new entertainment stories, and spent the mornings actually writing the show. I would write between 8-15 short entertainment stories per day that had to be completed by noon when the Producer and Show Host arrived at work. In the afternoons, I would update CMT’s Facebook and Twitter, help film the 60-second videos called Hot Headlines, and other various tasks.

What was the most exciting thing you got to do?

In 10 years I see myself with a family, being the Chief Information Officer of a global company, working somewhere in Latin-America , and skydiving.

Her smile, sense of humor and an interesting personality.

What activities are you involved with on campus?

Clever Twists on Pumpkin Decorating

10/27/2012

Pumpkin carving has been an ongoing autumn tradition for nearly every family across the country. But realistically, how many times can you carve the same toothy grin in the side of a pumpkin before the tradition seems a bit mundane? This fall, I suggest taking your pumpkins to the next level with these adorable decorations:

Glitter Pumpkin

What You’ll Need:
-Pumpkin
-Glue
-Glitter

Creating this glittery pumpkin is extremely easy and can be completed in just a few simple steps. Although, it may leave behind a little mess. After selecting your desired pumpkin, cover the entire surface with glue. For this step, you can use a paintbrush to reduce the mess. Before the glue dries, sprinkle your desired amount of glitter, again covering the entire surface. Place newspaper underneath to catch the excess glitter and let dry.

Pumpkin Flower Vase

What You’ll Need:
-Pumpkin
-Fake Flowers
-White (or preferred color) Spray Paint

This beautiful pumpkin vase can be used as an elegant fall centerpiece or decoration. To begin, gut the pumpkin as though you were planning on carving it. After scooping out the insides and setting the seeds aside to bake, spray paint the outside of the pumpkin and let it sit to dry. Once the paint has completely dried, place the stems of the flowers into the hollowed out pumpkin and place it on display for all to see.

A Not-so-Irrational Fear of Flying

10/20/2012

Fade in on a group of anxious travelers as they snake their way through never ending security lines. One by one, they make their way toward the gate and onto the airplane. After placing their luggage overhead, the squeeze their way into their tiny seat in coach, or their spacious first class recliner. Nervous passengers sip their drink as they peer out the window as the plane takes off and launches into the sky. After a series of bumps and jolts, the captain turns on the fasten seat belt sign. The intercom crackles to life as the pilot assures the passengers that they are experiencing some minor turbulence, but that everything will be fine. Until it isn’t.
The plane crash— it is the ultimate cliffhanger. This past television season has brought us every cliffhanger from sex scandals and unexpected weddings to separated twins and the reappearance of certain characters we presumed to be dead. However, no cliffhanger has been used as well as the devastating plane crash.
Grey’s Anatomy pulled this cliffhanger off all too well in what has been described by viewers as this seasons most heart-wrenching finale. A handful of doctors from Seattle Grace Hospital boarded a plane and headed to Boise, Idaho to operate on conjoined twins. Those on board included new parents Meredith and Derek Shepherd, bubbly pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins, tenacious cardiovascular surgeon Christina Yang, insanely gorgeous plastic surgeon Mark Sloan and Meredith’s sister and the love of Mark’s life Lexi Grey.

Here’s the Skinny: The Cabbage Soup Diet

9/21/2012

A friend of mine invited a group of us to her house for some margaritas. When I walked into the kitchen the aroma was enticing, however it was anything but limes and cheap tequila. The smell of cooked vegetables filled my nose and I just had to figure out what the source was. Soon enough I learned that one of her roommates was making a pot of cabbage soup for this weeklong diet she was starting, and she went on to briefly explain the Cabbage Soup Diet to me. For a week you can eat as much of the cabbage soup as you want, and each day has its own rules for what you can and cannot eat. Numerous end results have shown that by following this diet one can lose up to 10 pounds in a single week. That was the selling point for me, so I decided to give it a shot.

Day 1: Fruits
Here goes nothing...
My first attempt at the cabbage soup diet started Monday. Since alcohol is off limits this week, I treated myself to a little “Sunday Funday” full of Wings Over Athens washed down with a bag of Franzia. Needless to say, when I woke up Monday morning with a horrible hangover, cabbage soup was the last thing I wanted to be eating. To top it off, I had to work all day. Naturally, BW3’s was extremely busy and I wasn’t able to eat a single thing until my shift ended at 5:30.
As good as the soup tasted, it just wasn’t enough to satisfy my immense hunger pains. After eating a hefty bundle of grapes my stomach was still aching for some real food, but unfortunately I was only allowed to eat fruit and the soup. I ate another bowl and an apple, but again it just wasn’t enough to meet my cravings. I went to bed with an empty stomach hoping that Day 2 would prove to be easier because day 1 felt like a failure to me.
