Top 5 Throwback Halloween Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Even thought they might be considered cheesy now, this list of movies will forever be considered classics for 90s kids, especially for girls. During this upcoming Halloween season, sit back, relax, and enjoy childhood again by watching one (or all) of these movies.

1. Halloweentown

If you watched Disney Channel Original Movies as a kid, you have most likely watched Halloweentown. Everyone believed Marnie’s grandmother was the coolest grandmother out there. From taking rides on witches’ brooms to mixing magic potions, Marnie and her siblings always entangled themselves in multiple supernatural adventures throughout the mystical town.

Don’t forget about the rest of the Halloweentown movie series. Proceed to watch Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown as you please.

2. Hocus Pocus

Yes, this movie may be scary at times but who doesn’t love this Halloween classic? The Sanderson Sisters come back to Salem, Massachusetts after 300 years to suck the life out of children to gain immorality. Sounds horrifiying, right? To balance out the scariness, the film includes comedic aspects. Who doesn’t love to see Sarah Jessica Parker play the blonde ditsy witch, Bette Midler play the fiery (no pun intended) witch, and Kathy Najimy play the goofy witch? Also, who could resist singing along with Bette Midler’s “I Put a Spell on You”?

3. Casper Meets Wendy

Yes, Hillary Duff is in this 1998 Halloween flick, except she is pre-Lizzie McGuire and pre-teenage-pop star. In this film, Duff plays Wendy the Good Witch and she teams up with Casper the Friendly Ghost to defeat an evil warlock. Casper Meets Wendy is the kind of Halloween movie your parents rented from Blockbuster for you since they most likely would not let you watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre with them during the Halloween season.

4. Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire

What do the Hansen kids do if they have plans with friends but suddenly become grounded? They find any possible way to get their mother out of the house in order for their original plans to resume. Caroline Rhea, who starred as one of Sabrina’s aunts in the TV show Sabrina the Teenage Witch, plays Lynette, the Hansen children’s single, divorced mom, who happens to meet a mysterious man by the name of Dimitri. The youngest Hansen child named Taylor believes Dimitri is a vampire. Since his older siblings do not believe his theory, Taylor asks a vampire hunter in order to save their mother from any potential danger. Clearly the Hansen children should have seen this coming.

5. The Scream Team

The Soul Patrol, a group of ghosts that search for lost ghosts, team with 2 mortal children in hopes of finding the children’s dead grandfather’s spirit. Monty Python and the Holy Grail’s Eric Idle is part of the Soul Patrol. Viewers get a dose of Idle’s witty British humor throughout this film. Hocus Pocus’s own Kathy Najimy also stars in this Disney Channel Original Movie along with a young Kat Dennings, star of FOX’s hit television show 2 Broke Girls.
