Introducing Some of the 2012 Arts Council Award Winners!4/26/2012 |
One of the signs that our academic year at Boston College is finally wrapping up (and that finals are looming in the not-so-distant future) is when the construction workers take over O’Neill Plaza and start setting up the stages, booths, tents, and runways in preparation for Arts Fest. This year marks the 14th Annual Boston College Arts Festival, and events will be taking place Thursday, April 26th to Saturday, April 28th. It’s a fabulous opportunity to celebrate the impact that the arts have made on the BC community. Be sure to check out the schedule of events on the Arts Festival website so you don’t miss the amazing performances of your favorite BC a capella and dance groups. Also included in this year’s Arts Fest schedule are more than 1,000 student and faculty artists who will be presenting music, theater, dance, poetry, film, painting, sculpture and much, much more!

The Dreaded Senior Thesis4/4/2012 |
The senior thesis… I remember first hearing about it my freshman year when Taylor, a senior and the Captain of the BC Figure Skating Team (who I idolized at the time), kept on talking about her “terrible, awful, I hate you, %^&*(), THESIS!!” (of which she had only written… zero pages of!). At the time, it felt like forever before I would ever have to worry about such a hefty undertaking. But here I am, faced with my own thesis and trying to chip away at it. After listening to Taylor rant and rave about the dreaded project, you would think that I would’ve learned my lesson and decided early on not to even try to write my own. However, as junior year came to a close, I was determined to try – and succeed – to write a thesis. I figured it would be an excellent way to culminate my four years of academia at BC and I would go out with a bang. Yes, it would be a challenge and yes, it would push me to my limits. So without even batting an eye, last spring I logged onto UIS from my tiny apartment in Paris, where I was spending my junior semester abroad, and fearlessly registered for a senior thesis. I had no advisor, no idea about what I would write about, and no clue what was coming my way. Well, here I am, nearly a year later, 50 pages into the “terrible, awful, I hate you, %^&*(), THESIS!!” and much wiser. I haven’t gotten to the point when I’ve finished it and felt the “ah-ha, oh I’m so glad I did this, I’m so proud of myself, blah, blah, blah” moment. In fact, right now it feels like this so-called class is soaking up every ounce of my time, energy, and mental capacity. Hopefully it’s all worth it in the end, but we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s too late to look back now so I just need to forge ahead and hopefully give some tips to the BC collegiettes who are looking to take on their own senior thesis. |
Meet Cool, Calm, and Collected (oh, and of course charming!) Ryan McGuill!2/29/2012 |
When you first meet Ryan he gives off this laid back vibe that just makes you want to spend the rest of the day with him. Sure, some may call him hipster, but you can’t put a label on this one of a kind BC Superfan. C’mon, who else loves world capitals, burritos, trays in Lower, and Meryl Streep? While he may currently be off the market, he’s so charming, witty, and easygoing that you’ll definitely be willing to settle and just be friends with McG (one of his endearing nicknames). Bottom line….whether Ryan’s on the frisbee field, a service trip in Honduras, or a comfy beanbag chair in his common room in 90, McGuill definitely earns the title of this week’s Campus Cutie. |
A Menu Inspired by the Oscars!2/16/2012 |
It’s award show season! Personally, I love this time of the entertainment year. All the glitz, glamour, and gossip about who’s going to win what always gets me excited. I love watching it all unfold on TV on a Sunday night. My roommate and I have gotten into the habit of watching the red carpet pre-show and critiquing all the stars’ fashion choices and then running to Lower to grab cookies and fro-yo to nosh on during the show. For me, this is a win-win situation. I get to watch all the celebrities and live vicariously through them as I lie in bed and relax in my sweats. But I was thinking… for the Oscars, quite possibly my favorite awards show, why not switch up the routine? If you’re like me and choose comfort over craziness, use the Oscars as an opportunity to throw your own celebrity-worthy bash! Invite some of your friends over, glam it up, and make some munchies. To go one step further and win your own award for best hostess, design your menu to be Oscar-inspired. Below are some creative recipe ideas inspired by this year's Oscar nominees! So roll out the red carpet and throw on your party dress to host an Oscar celebration that George Clooney and Meryl Streep would want an invite to! For Midnight in Paris: |
Meet the Easy Going Football Superfan, Matt C. Nacier!2/1/2012 |
As soon as Matt Nacier says hello and flashes that infectious smile, you instantly know that you can be yourself around him. Matt’s laid back personality makes it easy to talk to him about everything from his greatest passions to his least favorite dish at Lower to his celebrity crush (hint hint…she’s pretty powerful in the White House). We could all learn a lesson or two from Matt, a sophomore at B.C., who adheres to the philosophy that you should live simply and always be yourself. What’s not to love about this ultimate BC Superfan who can also play the viola? Matt comes across as cool, calm, and collected. He’s an avid volunteer, played football at BC, and isn’t afraid to admit that one of his all-time favorite movies is a childhood classic. Not convinced that this week’s campus cutie is the ultimate catch? Keep reading…. |
What's Your Ideal Spring Break?!1/27/2012 |
Oh, spring break… c’mon, how much more college can it get? Tanning on a beach in Punta Cana all day, putting on your party clothes and raging from night till dawn, and repeating this for five glorious days. While this definitely sums up most people’s idea of a typical collegiette’s spring break, Her Campus BC is here to tell you that the Punta Cana party isn’t your only option. In fact, many students at BC use our week off at the beginning of March to do everything from going home to relax, to trekking to the south as part of a service trip, to flying half way across the world to visit friends studying abroad. With this in mind, here’s an idea of what consists of a few BC collegiettes’ spring breaks: “Anywhere warm!! I get so sick of the cold during the winter months, so Spring Break is a chance to get away from the chilly Boston weather. I guess I would say somewhere like the Bahamas where there’s tons of beaches, bars, clubs, and other fun things to do during the day.” – Serafina Zeringo, 2012 “Exactly what I’m doing this year. I’m going to Vegas to party and live it up there and tan. Then for the second half I’m going to the completely opposite world in Canada. I’ll go to Whistler to ski, see family and family-friends, and just relax. It’s kind of getting the best of both worlds because I get to be crazy and wild for the first half of break, then I get to wind down and relax with family for the last few days.” – Annie Giglio, 2012 “Hmmm, I guess the location doesn’t matter so much to me as long as I get to spend Spring Break with my friends!” – Danielle Parra, 2015 |

The Internship Chronicles: Saks Fifth Avenue11/20/2011 |
We worked hard on our resumes, applied to every job posting, and stressed over interviews. But it was all worth it to land our awesome internships! This is a blog series to highlight the incredible opportunities we had this past summer beginning our careers. If you worked at an internship this summer, contact us so we can feature your experience in an article! Saks Fifth Avenue. Three words synonymous with all things fashionable, stylish, and New York City. What collegiette™ girl wouldn’t jump at the chance to intern at such a luxurious and high-end company? Well, this past summer I was fortunate enough to grace the presence of the immense office building on the corner of 49th and Madison Avenue in N.Y.C., the corporate offices of Saks Fifth Avenue located directly across their flagship store.
My adventure as a Saks Fifth Avenue intern began hundreds of miles away from the Big Apple. I was studying abroad in Paris, France and got an email from a friend of mine who had graduated BC two years earlier. When she was my age, she had interned at Saks and was now employed with the company. She had heard from her coworkers that Saks had seriously improved their summer internship program and was currently recruiting on campuses across the country. Knowing that this opportunity was something I would be seriously interested in, she emailed me with the recruiter contact information and suggested I get in touch. I was ecstatic and immediately emailed Leah, the Saks recruiter. |
