How to Make the Ultimate Workout Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Scientifically speaking, there is only one factor that is proven to effectively stimulate the nerves throughout your body to complete that last rep of squats. This one factor? Nicki Minaj’s verse in Monster. Okay, I might’ve made that up (and pissed off all the neuroscience majors reading this), but I seriously could not make it through a workout without my music. If you struggle with making a playlist that helps you forget about the fact that you feel like you just got a hernia on the stair-stepper, I’ve got you covered. If there’s one thing I pride myself on, it’s my ability to cultivate a kick-ass playlist. The breakdown of a sweat-worthy workout is a pretty simple one. Here are the categories you need:

  • If I Can’t — 50 Cent

  • Where the Party At — Jagged Edge and Nelly

  • The Motto — Drake and Lil Wayne

  • Bring Em Out — T.I.

  • Like This — MiMS

The “I hope no one can hear the absurd amount of obscenities being screamed through my headphones right now” songs

  • 50K Remix — Waka Flocka Flame and T.I.

  • H.A.M — Kanye West and JAY-Z

  • Roman’s Revenge — Nicki Minaj and Eminem

  • Ooh Kill Em — Meek Mill

  • I Ain’t Got Time! — Tyler, The Creator

The boss women songs:

  • Diva — Beyonce

  • Did It On’em — Nicki Minaj

  • Raining Men — Rihanna and Nicki Minaj

  • ***Flawless — Beyonce

  • Here I Come — Fergie

  • I’m Legit — Nicki Minaj and Ciara

  • Boss A** B**ch Remix — Nicki Minaj

  • Home with You — Madison Beer

  • Cockiness (Love It) — Rihanna

  • Lemonade — Danity Kane and Tyga

The “Did I just accidentally drop it low in the middle of the weight room?” songs

  • Ms New Booty — Bubba Sparxxx

  • Yiken (Certified) — Priceless Da Roc

  • Bojangles Remix — Pitbull, Lil Jon and Ying Yang Twins

  • Drop It Low — Ester Dean and Chris Brown

  • Pop That — French Montana, Rick Ross, Drake and Lil Wayne

  • Work from Home — Fifth Harmony and Ty Dolla $ign

  • ReYup — Travis Porter

  • Pills & Automobiles — Chris Brown

Kanye (A category in it’s own … just trust me on this one)

  • The New Workout Plan (obviously!!!)

  • Drunk in Love Remix — Beyonce, JAY-Z and Kanye West

  • Cold — Kanye West and DJ Khaled

  • Black Skinhead

  • Touch the Sky

  • Good Life — Kanye West and T-Pain

  • Facts (Charlie Heat Version)

  • U Mad — Vic Mensa and Kanye West
