How to Properly Study for Midterms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Midterms can be a really stressful time for university students. Here are some suggestions of things to keep in mind during this tough period.

1. Write down your schedule.

With all of the exams and assignments you’ll be juggling, it is important to stay on top of things and make sure you are prepared to complete all of your assignments to the best of your ability. Whether it is in a planner or just a bunch of sticky notes, find a recording system that works for you.

2. Use your classmates.

In my experience, trying to take on the exam material by yourself prevents you from reaching your full potential. Forming study groups with your classmates allows you to talk through the material and share each other’s knowledge. If nothing else, it is comforting to know that other students are experiencing the same stresses you are.

3. Take advantage of office hours.

If you are struggling with the material for an exam and need clarification on class concepts, what better resource is there than the person teaching the class? The TAs and professors hold office hours so they can aid you in understanding the material. Don’t forget to take advantage of them when you’re stressed and/or stumped.

4. Remember your health.

We’ve all attempted to pull an all-nighter studying for an exam, but just remember that being healthy during exam time will improve your performance. Sleeping and eating right keeps you more alert while studying, and helps protect against getting sick. And we know that if there is anything worse than taking midterms, it is taking midterms with a cold.

5. Reward yourself when it’s over.

The best thing to do after you take an exam or submit an assignment is to take a breather and treat yourself for making it to the other side. Whether it is coffee with a friend, a mini shopping spree or just a really good nap, make sure you put aside time for yourself so you can refuel and be in the right state of mind for the next assignment or exam.
