Why Yoga is More Than Just Stretching

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

When people first think of yoga, a flood of stereotypes probably come to mind. I always thought yoga was just for the “hippie” type, and I never believed it was a serious way to get in shape. Once I actually tried it, I realized how many benefits it has both physical and mental. While the advantages are endless, there are several that really stand out.

It’s actually a really good workout!

When you hear about yoga, “hardcore workout” is probably the last phrase you would associate it with. Believe it or not, yoga is actually a great way to burn some extra calories, especially if you hate cardio as much as I do. Yoga focuses on strength training and flexibility, and while it can be intense, it’s not as overwhelming as some other types of exercise. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though. Yoga challenges you to move and engage muscles that aren’t used often, which gives your entire body a much-needed switch in routine. You may even be pretty sore the next day, but that’s just a sign that it’s working!

It’s more accessible than you think.

When I first thought about trying yoga, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to find any opportunities around me to do it, but I was extremely wrong. Yoga studios are a lot more common than you would probably think. There’s even Martin Yoga on S Lindell St. here in Martin! Also, the student recreation center offers multiple different types of yoga classes. If trying downward dog in a group of strangers isn’t your thing, there’s also a lot of ways to do yoga from the comfort of your own home. YouTube has thousands of free videos ranging from beginner to advanced. Also, you could always order a yoga DVD online, too.

There are minimal supplies needed.

Unlike other types of workouts that require things like weights, bands, balls and even specific shoes, yoga is very minimalistic when it comes to needed supplies. The only thing that may be deemed as completely necessary is a yoga mat, which can be found at a lot of stores for as little as $10. Other supplies that may improve your yoga skills include blocks, towels and high-quality yoga clothes like Lululemon, but they are definitely not required. As long as you have a mat and something comfy to move around in, you’re all set.

It works as a major de-stressor.

One stereotype about yoga that is probably the most true is that it’s an amazing way to relax. A major focus of yoga is breathing patterns. Deep breaths in and out have major calming effects. Yoga can be considered a form and mediation, and it can be a really great way to unwind while also building muscles and burning calories. If you’re having a stressful day, one of the best things to do is roll out your mat and spend some time relaxing with a calming sequence of moves that will lower your heart rate while also keeping you in shape.

There are so many different varieties of it.

Yoga is extremely versatile and has so many different subcategories. Chances are if there’s a certain type of physical activity you prefer, there is a version of it in yoga. The stereotypical, easy-going types of yoga include Hatha and Vinyasa which incorporate a lot of fluid movements and classic poses. If you’re looking for a more intense experience, try Bikram or hot yoga, where you do the same type of movements except you’re in a room kept at over 100 degrees and around 50% humidity. These are just the opposite end of the spectrum, and there are so many varying types of yoga in between.

Literally anyone can do it.

Seriously. No matter if you’re young, old, male, female, thin, overweight or anything else, you can do yoga! They even have special physical therapy yoga for people who are injured or disabled. Also, your level of expertise doesn’t matter. There are plenty of simple poses and stretches that are meant for beginners, and there is no prior knowledge required. Even if you have never participated in it before, you can jump right in without a problem.

For anyone who may be nervous to try yoga, don’t be afraid! Even the most skilled yogis were beginners once, too. It’s an extremely welcoming practice, and it’s an easy way to benefit both your mental and physical health. Next time you find yourself debating it, just go ahead and try a beginner video on YouTube. Who knows, you may have even just found your new favorite pastime!
