Fitness with Finesse: Tips for Overcoming Your Fear of the Weight Room

Oh, the weight room — an intimidating place filled with sweaty bros walking around like they own the place and trying to tell you you’re doing something wrong. Four months ago I would have never set a toe in the weight room, but, to my own amazement, I now walk in by myself with my head held high. The truth is that I was scared of being ridiculed for being a beginner, that didn’t know what I was doing, but the reality is that no one cares. Everyone in there is more concerned with themselves and getting their workout done. No one is judging you or laughing at you. The only person in there judging you is yourself.

There are a couple of things that helped me build my weight room confidence, and I hope they can help you overcome your fear, too.

1. Pick a time with less traffic and explore the weight room
It’s easy to get lost and not know where anything is located. That’s why I recommend taking inventory of where everything is before getting started. Go at a time when you know most college students won’t be awake, meaning super early in the morning.

2. Practice, practice, practice
Practice makes perfect in everything. Focus on your workouts in the weight room without worrying about what everyone else is doing. Don’t give up after failing the first couple of times, and always remember that those around you were newbies once too and can definitely relate. After some hard practice, you’ll be owning that weight room.

3. Go in with a plan
Going into the weight room with a plan will save you from wandering around aimlessly and not knowing what machine to use for what muscle. Knowing what you’re going to work out that day and looking up how to use certain machines is key. Ask an experienced friend for help or do what I do, and educate yourself by watching YouTube or Instagram videos.  

4. Get a gal pal
There is no better person to complain to about how heavy the bar is than your gal pal. I have one of my best friends (and unofficial personal trainer) to thank for getting me into weight training and for motivating me to never give up. There’s nothing better than women empowering other women to reach their full potential!

I hope one day the women-to-men ratio in the weight room increases so we see more women in front of the squat rack and off the elliptical. Ladies, remember that you have every right to be there just as much as the guys around you. It takes time to get comfortable in the weight room, so cut yourself some slack and remain confident!
