How You Can Stay Physically Active At Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Now that we are our homes all day, the only time we leave our rooms is to eat. We lie in bed and scroll through our phones for hours, watch Netflix shows without pause or stare at the ceiling with earphones in. This is what many of us would like to do all day if it were not for our stomachs making noises of hunger. Unfortunately, even if we are hungry, many of us may eat just to pass the time away because we are bored. Indeed, I admit that I am one of these people.

However, I have managed to find an activity that has encouraged me to get out of bed rather than just lie under my blankets doing nothing. Going on my phone for countless hours for the first few days of self-quarantine has motivated me to start exercising at home. Although there is no gym with a treadmill or weights, I have managed to find ways to get sweaty and to get my heartbeat racing by just using a simple yoga mat in my room. Despite the small space that we may have in our rooms, there is always a way to stay active at home. One way to stay active is by following online programs that have sets of videos on specific days for you to do. Currently, I am able to follow a consistent workout routine with Chloe Ting’s “2 Weeks Shred Challenge.” There are different exercises every day that target the abs, legs, arms and overall body. What I love about this program is that there is no equipment required and it can be done even without a yoga mat. Chloe Ting’s program is just one of many that are online and free, and you can easily make a schedule for yourself to get in that daily workout. Having a program with specific workouts will help you organize your schedule, allowing you to prioritize your studies while finding the time to stay active.

If an online program is not for you, you can try other videos that may be more appealing to you. One option may be Just Dance. Working out does seem tedious, but exercising while dancing and having fun might just be the way to help you stay active. I love Just Dance because it is a way to exercise that is more exciting and appealing than doing multiple dull exercises at a time. By incorporating popular songs and moves that anyone can follow on the screen, Just Dance is a way to get you sweating without making you dread the exercise. However, Just Dance is not the only option if you want to have fun while working out. There are an endless number of videos that you can search online that incorporate dance with popular music- like Zumba!

A very simple way of staying active at home is to just walk more around your home. Obviously, lying in bed seems like the better choice because you can just stay in one spot all day. However, by taking those few steps outside your room to walk around the house for a bit, you will feel more productive. I am still just a beginner at fitness, but working out at home has not only made me feel better throughout the day, but it has helped me in maintaining a proper schedule. Staying active during this time may seem like the least of your worries, but if you have the time, it does not hurt to try! Staying active at home will give you a sense of accomplishment once you finish those long workouts, and although you’ll be sweaty, you will feel amazing.
