Don’t Forget About Self Care

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

With final exam season fast approaching, it is only a matter of time that people will be pulling all nighters at Iriving and wiping their tears on the class notes they wish they studied.

Exam period is probably one of the most stressful periods that we students have to endure and it is easy to forget about your own well being.

Although it is tempting to study ten chapters without no breaks, or to stay up all night cramming, it is crucial to make sure that you take some time to relax, unwind and self-care

The term ‘self-care’ basically means to do something that you feel rejuvenates your mind, body and spirit. It can mean taking a break from studying to go for a walk or do some yoga. However, self-care is not limited to exercise. Even going for a cup of coffee with a friend can ease the stress that exams bring upon us.

Sitting at your laptop, staring at your notes for hours will lead to nothing getting into your brain. Take a break from the books every hour or so just to stretch or to take a little cat nap.

Self-care also relates to what we eat and keeping a healthy diet. It is so tempting to eat a whole pizza especially when you feel that final worth 50% of your grade tomorrow morning at 8 am is going to kick your butt.

However, what we eat also nourishes our brains and gives us the energy we need to retain information. Try to opt for some healthy snacks (a piece of fruit or some nuts) because they will keep your brain working.

Also, try to avoid those sugary energy drinks. They may give you the rush you need for a short period of time, but eventually the sugar dies down and you end up crashing – which isn’t ideal when you need to get through those notes.

Keep a bottle of water on you and coffee can help, but again an overdose in caffeine can lead to headaches and eventual sluggishness. Try some herbal tea instead as it is not as intense as coffee.

And, when you are feeling tired don’t try to stay up. We all know you can’t learn those physics equations at 4 am.

So, this exam season, remember that although school is important, your well-being is too. Give yourself some TLC.
