Your Go-To Guide For Staying Active In St. Andrews (Without A Gym Membership)

The St. Andrews bubble may be small, but there are so many ways to stay active that don’t involve endless walks to the sports centre or expensive gym memberships. In my first year, I didn’t have a membership myself, but that didn’t stop me from getting some fresh sea air or even occasionally tricking myself into thinking I was sporty. Whether you’re chasing endorphins or looking for an excuse to escape the library, there are plenty of ways to keep fit here in the Bubble.

Bubble run club

If the idea of joining a traditional running club sounds a little intimidating, Bubble Run Club is the perfect alternative. It’s beginner-friendly, super sociable, and you get a half-priced coffee from Spoiled Life post-jog! The route takes you from Spoiled, along to West Sands, and back. An easy 3k that’s more about taking in the seaside atmosphere rather than obsessing over pace. It’s also a great way to catch up with friends while sneaking in some exercise before classes on a Friday morning. Who knew running could actually feel fun?

Cycles around town

Cardio doesn’t have to be intense; it can also just be an excuse to explore. Hopping on a bike in St. Andrews doubles as both a workout and a little adventure. It could be a longer jaunt out to Crail, a quick spin along West Sands Road to watch the sunset, or even a ride to class when you’re running late. If you don’t have your own bike, renting one in town is easy and definitely worth it. Grab a friend and pack some snacks for the journey, and you’ll barely even notice you’ve exercised.

Exploring the Fife Coastal Path

The Fife Coastal Path is basically a free workout disguised as one of Scotland’s prettiest walking routes. The trail is perfect for brisk walking or full-day hiking, and you might even bump into some highland cows on your travels – the flexibility is unmatched. It’s both active and scenic (for the perfect Insta story post) and one of the best mini ways to escape the bubble of St. Andrews life.

Sea swims (and cold water dips)

No St. Andrews activity list would be complete without the classic sea swim – nothing wakes you up quite like diving into the freezing North Sea at Castle Sands. Beyond the bragging rights that you’ve had a productive morning cold water plunging, it is genuinely refreshing (once you’ve warmed up again). Some things to note: bring friends for moral support, wrap up in several layers afterwards, and reward yourself with a warm drink.

Hot girl walks

Sometimes the best exercise is the simplest. Pop in your headphones, queue up a good playlist or podcast, and head out for a scenic walk. Wandering into the quiet outskirts or along Lade Braes is a great way to clear your head. It’s not just about moving your body, but a good walk can also be a reset button for your brain, prioritising fitness and mental health all in one stroll.

If you need a little extra motivation to get you moving, however, the Dog Walking Society is the perfect way to rack up steps without even realising it. Volunteering to take local pups to get their exercise is an adorable means of exercising (and is especially appealing if you’re missing your own pup at home).

Staying active in St. Andrews doesn’t always mean having to fight for a spot on the treadmill. Sunset cycles, sea swims, or long walks are just a few of the many fun and affordable ways to keep your body moving in such a little town. Feel free to mix it up depending on your mood, the weather, or if you’d rather be solo. I may not have lifted a single barbell last year – but I kept moving nonetheless.
