For many of us, the semester is already starting to get a little overwhelming. Three weeks in and there’s homework to catch up on, shifts to work through on top of that, a life to keep up and of course there are those constant flashes of worry about what the future is going to hold.

College is a lot for the head to take. A usual day would consist of millions of thoughts running around and a million thoughts yet to start kicking in. This kind of mental activity is enough to wear anybody down, and it is more than enough to distract us from the state of mind that we need to be in.

Here are five tips that I keep in mind to keep up a calm and collected mind and soul.

1.     Take care of your space!

The space that you sleep in is where your body is going to be at its highest form of comfort. Keep your space as tidy as you want it to be – waking up and going to sleep in clutter that you don’t enjoy seeing contributes to your stress levels! Keep a candle of your favorite scent to freshen up the atmosphere. Another tip would be to get little succulents or even fake green plants to place around your room. The green plants are a refreshing sight for the eyes after a long period of focus and help calm you down.

2.     Make the most of your shower time.

There are so many affordable and fun body care that you can get in stores like Target, and the scents and textures of these products help relax you when you’re freshening up. As someone that gets stressed out very easily, I use scrubs with Eucalyptus and mint scents because they’re a stress relieving combination. Have fun finding your fix!

3.     Go wild with playlists!

Making playlists for your favorite moods or occasion are a fun way of letting your mind unwind and focus on something interactive for your senses. Make a playlist to walk to school to, do your homework to – anything at all!

4.     Treat yourself each week.

When you’re busy worrying about the responsibilities you have, it’s easy to forget about just taking care about your own needs. Set aside some time in the week to put yourself first for a couple hours – whether it’s to go grab your favorite food, binge watch your favorite movie or just sleep in. Do what you KNOW you want!

5.  Meditate.

Meditation does not have to be long and complicated. I use the phone app ‘Head space’ to set aside three minutes each day to gather my thoughts and energy. It’s visually pleasing with cute animations and a calming color scheme. There are so many different ways to meditate and so many platforms to find what best fits you!

A 3rd Year Journalism student at San Jose State University. I enjoy writing about an array of things, branching from opinions and thoughts about life to current happenings occurring in the world today. I appreciate being in tune with my feelings and my opinions through my work, more often than not observations of the people and situations around me. I have a dream of allowing people to capture the dark and golden elements of life through the things that I create, be it through writing, pictures or videos.
