distant eyes

looking but not seeing

the walls

dividing them

forever.

they once said

just a faltering promise

she could feel him slipping away

yet, she did nothing to stop it

what once filled him with warmth

now left only cold in her wake

and the nights became darker

lonelier together than when apart

the last goodbye didn’t come with tears

just a heavy tug at the heart

a broken smile saying:

“take care”

the distance between them was like an ocean

never to be crossed again

and so with their backs turned, they widened the gap

drifting away in the whispers of the wind
