5 Tips to Being Healthy from Someone Who Hates It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Living a healthy lifestyle is something that we all want… but realistically it is so hard. I want to be one of those girls who only drinks water and loves to go for runs and looks adorable at the gym, but I’m not. I hate running and I love carbs. That doesn’t mean I can’t try to be healthy in my own way, though. I’ve tried multiple diets and workouts and nothing seems to stick. Therefore, I decided that I will just work on being healthier and happier in my own skin. Here’s a few tips on being healthy from someone who hates it.

1. Decide to love yourself anyway

As cliche as this might sound, loving yourself should come first. You are a beautiful person, no matter what you think you need to change, so don’t be so hard on yourself

2. Write it down

Or get an app. I’ve learned that saying I’m going to eat healthy doesn’t change my daily patterns. However, writing down what you eat or tracking it in an app keeps me more accountable for my everyday choices.

3. Set realistic goals

I know that completely cutting out sugar and hitting the gym at 6:00 a.m. everyday is not going to happen. It just isn’t how I operate. As college students, we are busy so allowing yourself some leeway is OKAY. Setting goals that you can actually complete are better than setting yourself up for an L.

4. Don’t buy it

Out of sight, out of mind. When grocery shopping, resist buying the things you are trying to cut out of your diet. If it isn’t in the house, you are less likely to cheat.

5. Do it with a friend

Making a lifestyle change is hard. So make the appealing argument to your roommate to do it with you, cause who doesn’t love eating salads three times a day. Okay, just kidding. But honestly, having someone to complain to and to encourage you makes being healthy easier.
