Now that it’s September and your schedule is filling up, you may have less time to exercise and be active, but that’s no excuse to be a couch potato! Keeping in shape helps you stay mentally sharp and it’s as simple as doing an hour on a spin bike for every twenty you spend at the library.
If you’re not a self-starter, signing up for a fitness class is a great way to keep you committed. Plus you have an instructor and others around you to encourage you when the going gets tough. There are many fitness classes available at the McGill Gym that fit your schedule and your student budget (classes are typically between 3 to 5 dollars!). Check out the list below, which includes everything from spinning to yoga, to find out which one is right for you.
Spin and Trim: Monday & Wednesday, 6:00pm – 7:25pm
This class combines both cardio and strength training for a total-body workout. You’ll begin with an hour of group cycling to burn out your legs and increase your endurance, followed by 25 minutes of upper body conditioning to get your arms and abs looking nice.
Step: Saturday, 11:00am- 12:00pm
If you’re a lively and energetic person, then this class is for you. Torch calories by stepping and dancing to some great music all while improving your coordination. This beats running for miles any day.
Abs, Back, and Bootie: Tuesday and Thursday, 7:00pm – 7:55pm
Your abs are just as important as your bootie. This hour long workout will give equal attention to toning your stomach, back and glutes with a variety of exercises.
Spin: Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00am – 8:55am
If you need to get your weekly cardio in, but hate running, why not try a spin class? You’ll challenge both your aerobic and anaerobic systems, while strengthening your glutes and legs. You can always spot a cyclist by their shapely calves, so try this class if you want some gorgeous gams.
Body Design: Saturday, 12pm – 12:55pm
This class if great if you want an all-around workout. Work your arms, abs, legs, chest and more using your bodyweight, dumbbells and bodybars.
Detox Cycle Spin: Sunday, 11:00am – 11:55am
This class is great if you are just starting out or if you’re not a fan of high-intensity exercise. You’ll still be sweating, but the slower-pace is ideal for a Sunday morning. It’s also great to do after you’ve done a strength training workout or if you want to get in a bit of cardio without going to the max.
Hatha Yoga I: Monday and Wednesday, 8:00am – 8:55am
This is a beginner’s level hatha class that is great for newbies, but also for intermediate yogis. You can take time to stretch, relax, and unite body and mind after a rough night of studying. Mats are available at the studio, so you don’t have to bring your own.
