Why You’re Putting Off Going To The Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

1. You’re still in hibernation

Winter is coming to an end and you’re ready to start getting that summer bod we all dream of. But, you just can’t find it in you to pull yourself from the body imprint you’ve made in your bed. That’s okay! The key to getting back into the gym after a long, cosy hibernation is routine. Allocate slots of time that work for you between studies each week. Booking into exercise classes is a good idea because it means you have a set workout in a specific time period, all you have to do is show up! Don’t forget, if you’re just not ready to face it yet you can always do exercises from the comfort of your home.

2. You’ve not perfected your gym look

Nothing makes you want to want to get out of the house more than a new outfit. With brands such as Primark, ASOS and PrettyLittleThing bringing out new active wear ranges, you can rock that sweaty, red faced look with style, without a tear coming to your eye when you click ‘pay’. If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, Gymshark have just released their new Ombre collection and it is definitely one to try.

3. Stuck for exercises

Without knowing exactly what you’re going to do when you get there, going to the gym can involve a lot of sitting around on your phone pretending you know what you’re doing. One thing that a lot of gyms (should) offer is an induction. Although some gyms make you pay for this, it’s definitely worth doing as it shows you the proper way to use equipment in a way that will benefit you individually. Even going to a couple of guided classes can give you ideas of exercises to do on your own, so book yourself in! Finally, be aware of Instagram fitness accounts that claim to be experts, it’s okay to find exercises this way but make sure you give them a quick google to make sure your form is correct and you won’t injure yourself.

4. Self-consciousness

We’ve all had that feeling of walking into a weights room and feeling like the level of testosterone is so high no female could survive. But this is something (and one of the hardest things) to overcome. Weight rooms can be intimidatingly male-dominated, and it can sometimes feel like everyone is watching when you’re outnumbered. But it’s important to go ahead and use whatever equipment you want, when you want. Most people in weight rooms are too focused on their own workout to be looking at anyone else. As long as you know what you’re doing with the equipment you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. You deserve the workout you’re paying for so forget about everyone else, have confidence and do you!

Get out there and most of all, have fun! Find a way of making your workout work for you rather than the other way around and you’ll look as happy to be in the gym as this gal:
