The Best Herbal Remedies For What You’re Feeling

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

In this day and age, there are so many different remedies for anything that could possibly be ailing you, but unfortunately, a lot of them have become less natural and more chock full of chemicals that could be dangerous to other areas of your health.

So far this semester, I have embarked on the rewarding (but very challenging) journey of being more healthy. I am trying to get rid of the extra toxins I put into my body in the form of sodas, fast food, and processed foods, but alas, I am not perfect and I do tend to slip up here and there.

On this fitness and health journey, I have found one thing that is my saving grace: herbal tea. There is a type of tea out there for absolutely anything your body could be going through. I have outlined a few of my favorite teas and the ones that I feel are the most helpful for the day to day aggravations that could come your way.

1.) Chamomile Tea

This is my absolute favorite tea. It was the first one I tried because of its calming agents. It is a tea made from chamomile, rose petals, peppermint, and has a hint of lemongrass and lemon balm mixed into it. I have been drinking the TAZO Calm Chamomile and it really has worked wonders on my stress levels. This tea calms stomach aches, indigestion, and can reduce bloating. It has a soothing agent that calms the mind, easing it of its stresses, worries, and anxieties. It is also a natural sleep aid that fights insomnia.

2.) Ginger Tea

Ginger tea is the opposite of Chamomile. It is an energizer that stimulates and soothes your digestive system. This tea relieves nausea and holds anti-inflammatory properties.

3.) Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is actually sometimes prescribed by doctors to people who have troubles with irritable bowel syndrome and/or gall stones. This tea helps to get rid of nausea, vomiting, and especially motion sickness. If you are one who struggles with heartburn, this is not the tea for you as it seems to make it worse. Peppermint eases pain whether it be in the form of aches or chronic pains like arthritis. It helps with asthma and has natural anti-stress agents.

4.) Green Tea

Green tea is also commonly known as the “wonder herb.” It lowers your risk of cancer, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while also promoting heart health. It lowers blood pressure and controls dental issues, such as tooth decay. Green tea also helps the immune system by inhibiting different viruses.

5.) Echinacea

This is probably the best tea for winter time. It is used to cure the common cold and enhance the immune system. It also relieves pain, reduces inflammation, and is packed with antioxidants.

6.) Cardamom

Cardamom treats indigestion while simultaneously preventing stomach pains. It also relieves flatulence, so this is a really helpful post-meal tea. It helps with nausea and fights pulmonary disease. Cardamom is also very effective at clearing out phlegm that builds up in the body. If you have been on a caffeine binge for the last week because your classes are killing you, (don’t worry, we’ve all been there…) then drink a cup of this tea before bed because it detoxes the caffeine from your body. This tea is also a lady’s dream (and maybe even her man’s too) because it is extremely helpful for mood swings during menstrual cycles.

7.) Lemon Balm

This is a cool tea because you can not only drink it hot, but you can also use cold lemon balm tea bags to relieve cold sores. If you mix the hot tea with valerian, it treats anxiety, stress, and even insomnia, so it is a really good before bed tea! If you mix it with peppermint, it calms any upset stomach, digestive tract, and even reduces gas. It also helps a lot with nerve pain while also strengthening brain functions, memory, and puts you in a great mood!

8.) Lavender

Lavender soothes the mind and body, and it helps sleeping patterns. It uplifts the mind and spirit making it a really good meditation tea. It soothes and treats even the worst gas, colic, bowel infections, and irritated stomachs. I can also be used as a wash on the chest if you are really congested or have a bad cough. Using the wash also helps soothe bronchitis, asthma, cold, and other respiratory problems. It is a good fever tea because it regulates body temperature and can also heal cuts and sores.

9.) Cinnamon

Cinnamon tea clears the brain and thought processes so it is a great tea to drink when you just have too much going on and you need to take a break. If mixed with honey, it helps relieve cold and flu symptoms, and also soothe upset stomachs and diarrhea.

10.) Hibiscus

This tea reduces hypertension, which is really high blood pressure, and cholesterol. It protects against cell damaging free radicals and is packed with antioxidants.
