How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day if You’re in an LDR

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

When you live hundreds of miles from your significant other how do you manage to celebrate Valentine’s Day and your relationship overall?  With all the modern technology and all the other available resources, there is no reason you and your bae shouldn’t be able to celebrate this “holiday” and feel like you’re actually together.  Here are eight ways to feel close to your boo this Valentine’s day when you can’t actually be together.

Skype Date

This is what technology is for!  You and your S.O. can cook the same meal and then set your tables and it will be like you’re sharing a romantic dinner together.  Or you and bae can both watch the same movie on Netflix at the same time.  Even just sitting down to skype, sharing details about your day and talking is a great way to stay connected when you’re so far apart. Skype and FaceTime have made it easier for those of us in LDR’s to be able to see our SO whenever we want. Utilize it!

Send flowers/chocolate

Who doesn’t love a surprise gift?  Sure your boyfriend/girlfriend can’t show up at your doorstep with a giant heart shaped chocolate box or two dozen roses, but there are millions of services who will deliver these gifts for them!  There are dozens of online order shops for flowers and chocolate (Hello Edible Arrangements!) and a surprise gift is the perfect way to show the one you love that you are thinking about them.

Open When Letters

This is probably the millionth time you’ve heard about this idea but these are awesome!  You can’t always be there to celebrate that A bae got on a paper or to talk about the really horrible day your S.O. had at work. You and your partner lead busy lives and you aren’t always available to one another.  These Open When letters provide you or your bae with the perfect words for any situation when you just need their comfort or excitement!

FaceTime and explore each others’ cities

This is a great idea especially if you live in big cities like D.C. or New York.  Just because your boyfriend or girlfriend can’t visit and check out the city with you doesn’t mean that you can’t see the cites together. We all have smart phones we might as well take the time to use that FaceTime app while we’re out and about.  Go FaceTime monumenting with your bae if you live in D.C. or explore the streets of NYC.  Wherever you live, you know where the cool spots are that you’ve been dying to show your love, so take them on a tour this Valentine’s Day!

Care Packages

This one is right up there with the flowers and chocolate. You and your partner both lead busy lives so, why not do what you can to make theirs a little easier? Send them a box full of their favorite things: candy, a book, a coloring book and crayons, a picture or album of you two, whatever you think they would enjoy. Ship it to them a few days in advance and show them how much you love them and all the little things you remember about them. Care packages do just what their name says: show that you care.

Plan a Visit

Why not take the time that you both spend talking on the phone wishing you were together to actually book little trips to see one another?  Or better yet surprise your boyfriend or girlfriend with a visit!  Look at each other’s schedules and plan a long weekend trip (or two) and spend a few days with your S.O.  This way you both will miss each other a little less and you get to take a fun trip.

Download the Couple’s App

This app is so cute!  You can do cute little “thumb kisses” with your S.O. and send each other messages via the app.  It also reminds you of special dates to the two of you like each other’s birthdays and your anniversary.  You can draw one another pictures and even book restaurants for your next date when you get to see bae.  This is a great way to stay connected with one another.

Use a Recorded Message

Hallmark sells books and you can still purchase Build-a-Bears that send the gift of your lovely voice to your partner to be able to hear whenever they want. It’s great to get a text every morning saying “Have a great day” or one every night saying “Goodnight” or even just a text to say that your S.O. was thinking about you, but it’s even better to hear their voice actually saying it!  Record yourself and send it to your bf/gf as a gift so that even when you aren’t there, they can hear your voice.

There are so many great ways to stay connected today that there’s no reason you can’t feel close to your special someone. Show your love for bae this time of year with one of these ideas.  Happy Valentine’s Day!
