Everybody knows the stress a new semester brings. With the constant hustle and bustle of new classes, homework, jobs, clubs, keeping up with a social life, and much more. Attempting to begin a workout routine in the midst of all the craziness can seem next to impossible. But, I promise it’s not. Fitness has become such a large part of my life, and has impacted me in ways I thought weren’t possible. I feel better physically, mentally and emotionally after incorporating habitual exercise into my life. Starting a consistent workout routine all begins in the head. Here are a few tips for starting (and staying) in a workout routine:Â
1. Start by going to the gym the same time every day.
This helps start a consistent routine. Just like class is the same time every week, make it a point to go to spin class or the school’s gym at the same time each day you decide to workout. It starts to become a part of your daily life, and you’ll feel guilty if you miss it. Kind of how you feel guilty if you miss a class for sleeping in.
2. Plan your workout before you get to the gym.
This was a major issue for me for some time. I would get to the gym, and wander around aimlessly wondering what I was going to do next. Not only does this waste time, but you’re being unproductive in the time you spend wandering around the gym. Have a plan and stick to it. Write it in your notes app on your phone and put a little check mark emoji after each set or machine you complete; you’ll want to finish the whole workout on your notes because you set your mind to it beforehand.Â
3. Go with friends who will motivate you!
Nothing is more empowering than working out with friends who know what they’re doing and actually enjoy it. It makes you enjoy it more. Chatting with a buddy during a cardio sesh makes the time go by all the more faster. And if you have a bit of a competitive personality, it might even push you a bit harder in your workout.
4. Find what you actually enjoy doing.
Whether it be spin class, running, solely lifting weights, pilates, enjoying working out is the key to sticking to a routine! You’re not going to want to continue working out on a regular basis if you’re forcing yourself to do something you don’t even enjoy. This might be the most important tip.
5. Give yourself an incentive after working out.
Tell yourself if you stick to your scheduled workout session, you’ll treat yourself to a giant smoothie. Don’t indulge too much because, well, you just worked out super hard for a reason. But, give yourself a treat, whatever it may be.
6. Remember how good it makes you feel if you feel unmotivated to go one day.
I’ve never heard anyone say they don’t feel good after a solid workout. Scientifically speaking, endorphins are released in your brain creating a euphoric effect. I swear my mood is increased exponentially each time I leave a good sweat sesh.Â
After finding your workout niche, you will find yourself never wanting to leave your routine. It becomes part of your regular day to day activities, and both you and your health will benefit in the long run. It’s so worth it.
