As F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

Summer quietly gives way to autumn, and we finally reach one of the best seasons of the year. Suddenly, the weather turns crisp, and we find ourselves reaching for the warmest layers in our wardrobes. So, what better way to draw inspiration for your fall style than to curl up with your favorite blanket and a cup of hot chocolate while watching the coziest movies? From warm knits and comfy sweaters to oversized coats and leather jackets, here are five movies with some of the most iconic looks that will fill your September evenings even more!

Little Women (2019)

Few movies can capture the warmth and sisterhood like Little Women.

Set in 19th-century Massachusetts, the story follows the four March sisters: Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen), during and after the Civil War, alternating between two periods of their lives: childhood and womanhood. One of the most beautiful details of this movie is how each March sister seems to have a color palette of her own, making the visuals even more captivating. The movie’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, drew inspiration from radical women of the Victorian era to costume the sisters. And, when brought together, the earthy tones, soft greens, warm browns, and romantic layers create a timeless fashion inspiration.

Practical Magic (1998)

With Practical Magic 2 coming up soon, there’s no better time to revisit the magic spells of the Owens sisters. If your idea of fall fashion leans a little to the darker side, the original Practical Magic is your perfect inspiration. Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) – two witches from a long line of magical women – have in their style a dreamy combination of flowing dresses, oversized knitwear, and lace details. Sally loves a romantic look, with loose silhouettes and soft earthy layers, while Gillian embraces a more dramatic and sensual approach to the otherworldly aesthetic. Their witchy, bohemian wardrobes have that same cozy, romantic feeling as wandering through the streets of  London in the autumn, creating the prettiest atmosphere.

Carol (2015)

Carol follows the romance between Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), a young aspiring photographer who works in a department store, and Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), an elegant older woman going through a difficult divorce. Their forbidden love unfolds against a beautifully nostalgic backdrop in the early 1950s, around Christmas, making the movie feel like a dreamy winter in New York City. And the fashion, of course, is just as captivating. Carol has the wealthy, sophisticated looks, often seen in elegant tailored coats, leather gloves, fitted dresses, and luxurious fur collars, while Therese’s wardrobe is much simpler. Yet, there is something effortlessly beautiful about her looks, proving that you don’t need an elaborate wardrobe to prove a point.

Dead Poets Society (1989)

Dead Poets Society is an autumnal 90s icon. Set in a prestigious boarding school in Vermont, the movie follows a group of students whose lives begin to change completely after meeting their new English teacher, John Keating (Robin Williams). The boys uniforms create that effortlessly academic look that has become so associated with fall fashion, capturing this perfect nostalgic feeling of autumn and making it easy to bring a little dark academia into your wardrobe. The muted colors and layered silhouettes make the outfits especially fitting for colder days, while the slightly oversized clothes give them a more relaxed feeling. Even though the movie takes place decades ago, its own style still feels surprisingly easy to recreate – all you need is a comfy sweater and perhaps a little poetry.

Twilight (2008)

And last, but certainly not least, we couldn’t talk about the fall season without mentioning them: Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Twilight is practically a color palette for fall – there’s something so comforting about the rainy streets of Forks.

Bella’s wardrobe is especially easy to recreate, she loves wearing cool-toned blues – and as Edward is always happy to point out, blue looks really good on her – and the kind of clothes that feel just as comfortable on a rainy afternoon as they do while walking through the woods: long sleeves, cozy boots, and a jacket you can throw on as you head out into the rain. Edward and the Cullens, however, take a more elegant and somewhat classier approach to fall dressing. Edward’s wardrobe is filled with classic jackets, button-downs, neutral tones, and perfectly layered pieces, while the rest of the family leans into a similar sophisticated aesthetic.
