Czech it Out: Sarah's Semester in Prague

5/6/2013

My semester abroad in Prague has flown by sooo quickly. Now that it’s May, I am so sad to think of returning back to a busy life, with the ability to use my iphone and be in contact all the time, and a drinking age of 21. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited to see everyone at home and be back in a country where I don’t get nervous to talk to locals, but studying abroad is such a great time and amazing experience and I am going to miss it all when I get back the States.

Brandeis:

What are you involved with on campus?

My extracurriculars are dwindling by the semester, but I still help out with the ELL (english language learner) program. My student, Guadalupe, is an absolute gem. Look out for her in Gosman and say “hi,” you won't regret it.

What's your favorite class you've taken at Brandeis?
I've taken a handful of awesome classes here, but my favorite is probably Short Story in Russia. Professor Feuer Miller is one of a kind- super insightful and facilitates a great discussion.

Favorite place to eat on campus: I usually wait in line for Marie and get a sandwich.

Favorite place to eat off campus: If I were to go off campus, I'd either make the trek to Porter Square and get a burrito from Anna's Taqueria or I'd head back to Concord and get some pizza from Sorrentos. Depends on the kind of day it is.

Dating:

Relationship status: I'm lucky to have found myself a Brandeis cutie of my own…

What do you look for in a girl?
Pretty standard interests- a good sense of humor and someone who's up for an adventure.

What's your biggest turn off?
Biggest turn off is a snorer for sure…

What's your ideal date?

Class: 2015
Major/Minor: Hopefully Business by the end of this semester
Hometown: Great Neck, NY, strong island represent

HC: So you were just elected East Quad Senator, congrats! How is that going, and what do you hope to accomplish for the year?
EL: Thanks! So far it's been going well. I've been meeting with the Student Union and the CDC of East to do my best to improve the quad for the majority of the class that's living here. I want to improve some of the facility concerns and hopefully have some sort of Pom/Hass mixer so that everyone gets to meet each other.

HC: What's it like being on the fencing team at Brandeis?
EL: Being on the fencing team here is great. I absolutely love it. We're like a giant family (some would argue we're more like a cult) and it's great to be surrounded by people of all different personalities and skill levels and to compete against a variety of schools, even those that are Division 1.

HC: Did you fence before coming to school?
EL: I fenced for my high school team (Great Neck South) and for a club outside of school (Five Towns Fencers Club). I've been fencing since 9th grade.

HC: What's your favorite class you've taken at Brandeis so far?
EL: My favorite class was True Crime in American Culture with Professor Doherty. It was an interesting class I never would have thought I'd take in a million years.

HC: Do you have a hidden talent?
EL: Nothing really comes to mind, I can however solve a rubik's cube. Does that count?

Fitness Class 101

10/11/2012

I try to work out every day of the week here at school in order to stay in shape and have some time away from my schoolwork. However, the semester is finally kicking off, and I already find myself sick and tired of my boring routine of elliptical training and running on the treadmill as my source of exercise at the gym. So this week I decided to try one of the great fitness classes Brandeis offers because I have not really taken advantage of them since I got here. I chose to go to a class called “Luscious Legs and Arm Candy,” which is a one-hour, high-intensity cardio workout.

I think of myself as a pretty athletic person, but this class really kicked my butt—in a good way, of course. The class consisted of nonstop choreography with all different kinds of moves, like kickboxing, and it had great, high-energy music to go along with it. The instructor was also had a lot of energy and showed me how to use the moves to get the best workout I could. I found the class to be a great workout that worked muscles I don’t always engage when I’m using cardio machines.

So if you’re like me and sick of using the same machines every day at the gym, I highly recommend you try this class or any of the other classes Brandeis offers, like cardio-kickboxing and yoga. You can check the fitness class schedule at http://www.brandeisjudges.com/recreation/group-fitness.

Year: 2016
Major/Minor: HSSP/Economics

HC: When did you first start playing soccer?
AP: I started playing soccer when I was about four because my older brothers were constantly playing and I wanted to be just like them.

HC: Is it hard playing a varsity sport as a freshman just starting college?
AP: I absolutely love being a part of the Brandeis Women's Soccer team! I think that getting to be a part of the varsity program as a freshman has been an incredible opportunity as I got to meet a whole new group of people as soon as I entered Brandeis and join the tight knit community that is the team. It's always nice to know that someone will be there for you no matter what when entering a new situation.

HC: Did you always want to play soccer in college?
AP: I knew that I definitely wanted to play either tennis or soccer in college, and finally decided that soccer was the way to go in the fall of my junior year. I'm really happy with my decision as it brought me to Brandeis.

HC: Is it hard balancing schoolwork and soccer?
AP: I've had a lot of practice with balancing school and sports from high school to now, so the adjustment isn't to dramatic. I try to focus on school from 9-4, and that gives me plenty of time to get the majority of my work done in time for soccer. I have found that at night I end up having a ton of free time to just relax.

Update Your iTunes: Songs by Springfest Performers

4/27/2012

Are you ready for Springfest? Do you know Childish Gambino’s hottest songs right now? Well listen up to these artists’ most well-known songs so that you are ready to jam out this Sunday at Springfest.

Childish Gambino- “Heartbeat” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFVxGRekRSg, “Freaks and geeks” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otPxoVQiIGo
Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover is a funny guy by day on Community and an awesome rapper by night. His most popular song right now I’d say is “Heartbeat,” which he just performed at Coachella. It is awesome and gets the crowd going. “Freaks and Geeks” is also a great song of his with some clever lyrics.

Fun.- “We Are Young “ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv6dMFF_yts&ob=av2e
Fun. Describes themselves as a 70’s style reinvented. Everyone knows about Fun’s signature song right now, “We Are Young” and though it’s not much of a dancing song, you can definitely rock out and sing it loud with your friends.

Nite Jewel- “One Second of Love” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YMmX1f5sQI

David Fisch '13

4/18/2012

Don’t know who the candidates are for Student Union President in this election? Well check out this week’s campus celebrity, David Fisch! He is a junior running for President for next year who hopes to make changes that will make Brandeis even better than it already is. Maybe you’ve heard him do a radio show on WBRS or have seen him at a BOO event because David loves getting involved on campus and meeting new people. Read on to see more of what he is all about.

Hometown: Scarsdale, NY
Majors: Economics and American Studies,
Minors: Journalism and Film, Television & Interactive Media
Year: 2013

HC: We hear you like to do a lot on campus. What are you involved in?
DF: I'm a major member of the Brandeis Orthodox Organization (BOO), Hillel, and Chabad, however I really don't identify with any particular segment of Judaism. I also am very involved in the campus radio station, WBRS. I have been News Director, Acting Program Director, and will be Sports Director next year. I have been a part of the Student Union prior to this candidacy. During my first year I was on the Student Union Task Force and worked to make the first-year random roommate questionnaire more in-depth. During my sophomore year I was the Class of 2013 Senator and the Chair of the Club Support Committee.

Lenny Schnier '13

3/29/2012

Meet junior Lenny Schnier. This guy has got a lot of talent. He’s incorporated his love for art into his major and is involved in the SCRAM committee at the Rose Art museum as well as the Graphic Design Club. You can get to know him and what he is all about below.

Hometown: Long Beach, NY
Major: Studio Art
Year: 2013

HC: how did you get involved in SCRAM committee?
LS: I got involved with SCRAM through working at The Rose. I was a gallery guard last year and I work in the office of the museum this year. The museum is our campus' most underrated and underused resource. Literally everyone can get something out of an experience there.
