HC Brandeis's Favorite Fashion Blogs

3/14/2013

We'll admit it: we spend way too much time on the internet. Here are the fashion blogs we've been loving lately:

Patrycja likes following @fashionclimaxx2, which is the instagram of the fashion site, Fashion Climaxx. She likes it because it shows large variety of styles, inspiring her to spice up her wardrobe with new trends!

Elizabeth R. adores following Obsessee, an L.A. based fashion blog created by Madeline Sensibile. Maddie is a college student (likes us!) who's been blogging ferociously since her high school years. What Elizabeth loves about following Maddie's tumblr and main site is "seeing how she infuses a love for British Pop Rock, Punk Rock, or current music inspiration, into her killer taste in fashion and personal style." Sounds awesome! We'll have to bookmark it.

The Female Survival Guide to the Weight Room

1/30/2013

Do you want that summer body before the weather warms up? Well, there is a secret that most girls do not know about and you are about to find out!

Most girls stay clear of the weight room on campus because they either do not know what to do, or are intimidated by the atmosphere of all guys lifting. However, if you add a weight routine when you go to the gym, you will get a lean, more toned, and strong body FASTER!

How you may ask? When you do just cardio, you are only making areas of your body slimmer without any control of your trouble areas. After a 20-30 minute cardio warm-up, whether it is on the machines or a run outside, you should hit the weight room.

Once you are in the weight room, allow yourself about 10 minutes of stretching your legs, arms, and back to avoid any future injuries and increase your flexibility. Then, plan each day based on the areas of the body that you want to focus on. So, one day you will do all legs and the other day you will do arms, etcetera. Ideally, you would want to do 2-3 sets of 20-25 repetitions with each exercise.

On the days that you decide to focus on achieving that toned 6-pack that you have always wanted, start with 50 basic crunches followed by side crunches. Continue with planks (both on your elbows and on your side), bicycle crunches, crunches on the yoga ball, and reverse crunches. You can also add vertical crunches, Russian twists, and the rowboat.

The love handles are one of the trickiest areas to get rid of. There is a machine in the weight room, called the Roman Chair, which targets that specific area (as well as every other abs). You start with back extensions lying facedown along the machine, and once you are in a secure position grab a 10 lbs. weight and bend down at the waist. Then straighten your body out with each repetition. Do the same on the sides.

Major/Minor: Double Major in History and American Studies with a Minor in Business

Class: Junior

Hometown: Woburn, Massachusetts

Single/ Taken: Single :)

Vinnie is known to be your typical Bostonian stud walking around campus. He works hard throughout the day by studying for his double major and minor, but he also plays hard on the weekends at the local frat house ZBT. This junior hottie has more surprising secrets that meets the eye. Interested? Read to find out more!

HerCampus: It is not unusual for a Brandeis student to have multiple major and minors. So, why did you choose all of yours?

Vinnie: I've always had a certain fascination with American History and with American culture in general. I find there's always something new to learn about the greatest country in the world. With respect to my minor in Business, I enjoy the creative thinking that can come out of business and the places it can take you in life.

HC: What do you see yourself doing in the future with these majors?

V: Hopefully I'll use the knowledge and experience I've gotten at Brandeis to get a job in financing, in the area around Boston

HC: What are you doing to aid this goal now?

Want to Go to the Gym and Look Cute? Now it’s Possible!

11/29/2012

With every gym session, a girl wants to be able to show off her progress of her new toned, lean body. What better way to show off what you got than with your cute gym outfits? The outfits are half the game when it comes to attracting attention from those who are at the gym. Cute gym outfits do not only possess the capability of flaunting your best features, but they also have the power of giving you that extra motivation to work out harder because YOU LOOK SO GOOD!

Now, most people struggle with what is considered to be “appropriate gym wear.” What is the best thing that you can wear that will not only make you feel confident but also project that level of confidence to others? Well, this is where I come in to save the day. As an avid gym rat, I have been a member of many gyms in different states and have gotten the overall picture of what is popular at the gym scene.

The most popular piece of clothing is yoga pants! Not only do they show off your shapely behind, but they are primarily found in black (a slimming color at all angles) with a little bit of extra glam with the neon, bedazzled bands around the waist. What’s even better with the yoga pants is that they do not give you the illusion of a “muffin top” that you do not have because of their tightness of the waist. They make me feel confident to work out in ANYTHING, and that’s saying something.

Roman Bulgakov '14

10/21/2012

Hometown: Cheboksary, Russia.
Class: 2014
Major: Business and Film

HerCampus: Since you are the founder of 'Brand' New Talent Agency, could you tell the readers more about the organization, and how you came up with the idea?
Roman: I have always wanted to build a club from scratch and make it strive for many years after I graduate. Ever since I came to Brandeis, I’ve been looking for a good idea for a club. I had an advertising agency in mind for a while. I even went to the Student Union with it only to find out that the marketing club was essentially the same thing and it was being revived. But nothing could stop me from doing my own thing, so instead of giving up I suggested another idea – a talent agency. It really comes from my goal to become a talent agent after graduation. I would need experience representing actors and since Brandeis did not provide such opportunity, I had to create it for myself. Also, my disappointment with Brandeis filmmakers, who used the same actors over and over again for their projects, fueled my interest to bring new faces to student videos. We are still in the process of setting up, but we are off to a good start. We have already helped student directors to find talent for their projects and it worked out well so far. We welcome new actors and any of the readers interested in being represented can contact me through FaceBook or e-mail. I have two other people on my team and we are constantly looking for actors to add to our database.

Sneha Walia '15

10/6/2012

Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Shrewsbury, MA
Major: Not Declared. Intended Major in Politics Psychology and Minor in Theater and Social Justice Policy

HerCampus: You have been featured in a 24-Hour musical here at Brandeis. How did you start your
career in theater?
Sneha: So, I have known about the 24-hr musical since last year by a couple of friends who did it. I do
theater on campus, but I didn’t do the 24-hour last year. I really regretted it. So, I took the
chance to try it out this year. I’ve always like theater in high school, but never really got involved. Last
semester I decided to do the comcasting (for In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play) where you basically
try out for a bunch of shows through one audition, and I was cast in a show. I had a really good time.
This semester I am in a theater class, and I’m also in Macbeth this semester.

Joshua Hoffman-Senn '13

4/18/2012

With Student Elections just around the corner, Her Campus has decided to give you the lowdown on some of the presidential candidates. Of course, we all love Herbie, but since he's graduating, it's time for a new leader to take over. Check out with the eager Joshua Hoffman-Senn '13 has to say about his candidacy!

Year:2013
Majors:Economics and Chemistry
Hometown:Swampscott, MA

Her Campus: The word around campus is that you are running for the Student Union President. Why did you choose to run for Student Union?
Josh:Through my experiences at Brandeis, I have noticed a lot of potentials to make big changes—lasting changes—on campus. I saw this opportunity through the Student Union. When I leave, I want to know that something has changed, that something improved while I was here. As of yet, I have been trying to accomplish this through the Econ Society. But as President of the Student Union, I can leave behind a lot more.

HC: If you were chosen as the next Student Body President, what are some of the potential goals that you had in mind to implement?
JHS:The first big change, or the first problem that I am going to address, is that the Student Union lacks sufficient funding for chartered clubs. One of our prides on campus is for how easy it is to start a club, but that means that the same budge is distributed throughout more and more groups. The solution, which has been implemented at other universities, is to seek sponsorship. I know how to pursue this, and there is a realistic way to increase the budget.

Sam Shankland '14

3/22/2012

Sam Shankland ’14 has accomplished more than many of us could say. He travels the globe playing with some of the the best chess players in the world. Chess may not be the most popular sport among the college population, but it is for Shankland. Do you think you have the moves to go up against this world champ? Keep reading to find out!

Name: Sam Shankland
Year: 2014
Major: Economics
Hometown: El Cerrito, CA

HC: When did you start playing chess?

Sam: I started to learn the pieces at a really young age, around six, but I didn’t actually start playing until later on. I entered my first tournament when I was 12 years old, when I first began to learn how to play. I wasn’t like other wonder geniuses that started playing at really young ages. I am really happy to have figured out my talent even though it’s not really mainstream.

HC: It’s amazing how quickly and well you learned how to play in such a short period of time! Why did you start playing chess?

Sam: I really don’t know. I went to the chess club after school because I enjoyed it. I was an athlete and very competitive – I enjoy the feeling of victory. Even in second grade, after I lost my soccer game, I was really upset. Chess fed that inner competitive need that I have and then I fell in love with it.

HC: Wow. That’s impressive. Did you have a career with chess since you started playing?
