Obama speaking at the University of Colorado

4/21/2012

President Obama has announced that he will be speaking on Tuesday, April 24th at CU.  The event will be at the Coors Events Center and students can get their free tickets starting at 11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22nd.

Tickets will be distributed in the Glenn Miller Ballroom, located in the UMC.  Students are also required to bring a student ID card to receive the tickets.

The speech is scheduled for 6 p.m on Tuesday and to enter the venue students must have a valid ID and their signed tickets.

The President plans to discuss student loans and keeping interest rates low in an effort to honor students who are earning their college degrees. The rising cost of college education has been a heated topic on a national level and at CU, the issue has been the root of recent campus protests. Many students are eager to hear what the President has to say.

“It shows that CU Boulder as an institution is on the map and that the student activism on campus is being heard.  It’s exciting that President Obama is addressing the issue of student debt which has reached over 1 trillion dollars this year,” said Martha Obermiller, a junior at CU.

Officials said the number of tickets distributed is limited, therefore, plan accordingly and make sure to stop by the UMC and take advantage of this opportunity.

Springtime is in Full Bloom

4/8/2012

Nothing signifies springtime more than a fresh bouquet of flowers.  In Colorado, April showers don’t necessarily bring May flowers.  The weather is always unexpected in the springtime, but one way to keep your mind at ease that it is almost summer is by keeping a beautiful bouquet in a central location because it instantly brightens any college home.

Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective.

4/8/2012

“Nothing is more beautiful than a naked body.  The most beautiful garment that may clothe a woman are the arms of a man she loves, but for those who have not had the chance to find this happiness, I am here,” –Yves Saint Laurent.

In a state full of outdoor enthusiasts who might confuse some of fashion’s most famous designers with a type of yoga; our capital is steadily climbing on the trend scale.  With many students in Boulder who come from the East and West coast (where impressive exhibits are commonplace), expectations are generally low when it comes to major fashion events happening in the area.  However, Denver just wowed all of the fashionistas around the state because the city is hosting The Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective exhibition, and it is the only U.S. city to do so.  The exhibit is the largest display of the designer’s haute couture, featuring 200 garments, including tuxedos from YSL’s famous “Le Smoking” collection and photographs of Yves Saint Laurent himself.  The collection is traveling to only Paris, Madrid and Denver, but the good news is that it is at the Denver Art Museum until July 8, 2012.  As you walk from room to room you will learn about the early day’s of YSL’s career when he was working with Dior, all the way through his 40 years of design.  At the entrance of the exhibit there is a large screen playing YSL’s final fashion show, which was in 2002, bringing the beauty of the pieces to life. Some say Denver Art Museum was chosen because of the modern architecture, some say because YSL would have liked the unexpectedness of it.  Either way, we’re glad its here.

Madeline Rose Jewelry

4/6/2012

Meet Madeline Rose Morton.  She is a student at CU and a young entrepreneur who has just launched her own jewelry line, called Madeline Rose.  For Madeline this has been a passion since high school and with the encouragement of her family she has combined her interests of fashion and business and created a line of jewelry that showcases her personal creativity to create eye-catching, fashionable pieces. The unique pieces are composed of mostly natural elements, each one hand-made and one of a kind.
Her Campus CU Boulder had the opportunity to interview Madeline about her new line and we were inspired by this girl’s ability to make her goals a reality.

Snowball 2012: A Success?

3/7/2012

Last weekend marked the 2nd annual Snowball Music Festival held in Avon, Colorado.  Many Boulderites headed up to the mountains Friday to enjoy 3 days of non-stop womping to dubstep and electronic beats, dancing in the snow and swaying along to several indie bands.  Despite enjoying the weekend overall, many people were disappointed in this years line-up when comparing it to last years.  Snowball 2011 included headliners such as Edward Sharpe, The Flaming Lips and Local Natives.  Nonetheless, the festival this year had it’s own perks, featuring artists such as, Snoop Dog, The Kooks, TV On the Radio, Big Boi, Ghostland Observatory, and The Head and The Heart.  Fans were excited to see Bassnectar return, who finished off the festival on Sunday night.

The over-all success of Snowball can be accredited to the up and coming artists who show up and the endless amount of stages each festival go-er has to choose from but most importantly it's enjoying the live music in the mountain air.  Students were creative in their attire despite the cold temperatures and in the crowds you could find brightly colored one-pieces and many people wearing spirit hoods.  As students returned to Boulder this week many of them can agree on one thing for sure: there’s something about a festival in the Rockies that CU students just can’t say no to.

Parking on Campus

2/12/2012

It’s no secret that finding parking on the university of Colorado’s campus is not an easy task and CU is trying to take action to make the process smoother for commuters. The campus might be seeing changes in the very near future. The plan was presented at the Boulder Campus Planning Commission meeting.

The University of Colorado projects a 9.4% increase in student enrollment over the next decade, meaning that more and more students need to get to campus daily.  CU has no choice but to come up with a new plan to accommodate the university’s growing population.  The permit would be limited to only a couple days a week, to encourage students to use alternative transportation other days.  The plan also includes raising the price of parking on campus but suggests giving breaks to students who carpool and employees.  Another change CU might be seeing is the implementation of electronic parking systems that indicate an available spot.  CU parking might become more efficient but it certainly won’t be easier so you might as well pump up your bike tires and dig out your RTD pass from under that pile of clothes.

Ally Week 2012

2/12/2012

This week at CU is Ally Week.  An annual week devoted to bringing attention to the underrepresented groups on our campus.  The goal of ally week is to unite the student body and bring recourses to underrepresented groups at CU.  The week is an opportunity for anyone to make a difference and there will be exciting events going on Monday through Saturday.  The week is put on by The Center for Multicultural Affairs, Cultural Events Board, GLBTQ Resource Center, Interactive Theatre Project, Office of Victim Assistance, Project4Unity, Student Outreach and Retention Center for Equity, Queer People of Color, and Women's Resource Center.  The groups want to educate CU students to be allies on campus, to take a stand against social injustice aimed at groups.  Each event is open to anyone on campus so be sure to check out the schedule and participate in this great cause.

Climber or Celebrity?

11/20/2011

Boulder is the country’s climbing hub and with so many students passionate about this daredevil sport there are many accomplished climbers amongst the CU student body.  Aaron Ramras, a junior at CU, has been climbing all his life and has accomplished some very difficult climbs in his lifetime.

Four-year-old Ramras fell in love with sport when his dad took him to the top of Horsetooth rock in Fort Collins, Colorado.  Since then he has climbed dozens of mountains and has plans to continue expanding his achievements.
Although Ramras doesn’t compete he does enjoy the social aspect of the climb.

“Taking people climbing for the first time and showing them one of the coolest experiences of their lives is really fulfilling.  There’s nothing cooler for me than helping someone to do something that they didn’t think they could do before,” said Ramras.

Last summer Ramras did a solo traverse in Rocky National Park, which involved climbing 11 peaks and 13,000 feet of ascent. His next big goal? He hopes to get more involved in wall climbing and multi-peak traverses.

“My primary goal for this winter is to get better at ice climbing and mixed climbing for big mountaineering routes,” said Ramras.

Ramras might not be famous quite yet but he has definitely made his passion a reality.

Fall Fun

10/19/2011

We never get too old for fall festivities. In college our closest friends become family, so instead of getting nostalgic over how fun it was to carve pumpkins back in the day take advantage of Colorado’s beautiful weather and participate in some fall fun with your Boulder family.  Here are 4 things you can do to make the most of the autumn air!

Pumpkin Patch Playtime

Head over to the Cottonwood Farm, located on the Southwest corner of 75th Street and Arapahoe Road.  This family owned is filled with fun activities you can enjoy all day.  A corn maze, animals and a hayride complete with beautiful views of the flatirons

     2. The Scariest Haunted House Colorado

Legend has it that the 13th Floor Haunted House is the scariest in Colorado.  It’s located on Brighton Boulevard in Denver and tickets are $20.00.

     3. Take a Drive to Estes Park
Grab your camera and head to Estes Park to capture the scenic foliage and maybe spot an elk if you’re lucky.

     4. Get lost in a corn maze at the Denver Botanic Gardens
It’s an 8-acre puzzle that only costs $8.00 if you’re a student.  Plus, there is a showcase of unique Native-American artwork located in the gardens as well.

The Flatirons

9/26/2011

Rated top ten on National Geographic’s list for best climbing towns in America, Boulder is known for being an incomparable destination for Rocky Mountain climbing.  Boulder has a plethora of climbing gyms to choose from as well as many beautiful outdoor climbs.  A popular destination for many CU students: the stunning flatirons.

The flatirons climbs range in difficulty but always offer breathtaking views.  The first and third flatirons are considered less difficult and are scaled much more often then the second.  For some the climb itself is exhilarating enough but know that Boulder’s unique residents have climbed the flatirons in many exceptional ways-during the night, without ropes and even naked.
