Pumpkin spice season is coming to a close, which means it’s time for hot chocolate to take the bevvy throne. You might have a go-to hot cocoa recipe already, or you might be on the hunt for something new. If you’re the latter and you live in the Los Angeles area, the grocery chain Erewhon has something brand new in store for you this December: a hot chocolate made with bone broth.
On Dec. 1, Erewhon is joining in on the protein craze (and bone broth trend) to share its newest creation in collaboration with bone broth brand FOND Regenerative to revamp a classic holiday bev. ICYMI, #Bonebrothhotchocolate is already popular on TikTok, but if you’re not so daring to buy some bone broth and try making it yourself, you can try out this new option from the LA-based store. It’s strange, but intriguing.
As you’ve probably guessed, it’s not prepared like your typical hot cocoa. Made with coconut milk and a touch of maple syrup, Erewhon’s new hot chocolate is spiced with cinnamon and a dash of cayenne — plus FOND’s Ginger & Cayenne Beef Bone Broth. It’s sure to be unlike anything you’ve had before — and it’s good for your gut. (Plus, it’s dairy-free!)
So, why bone broth? ICYMI, bone broth typically provides around 9-10 grams of protein per cup, and contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Not to mention, it’s rich in nutrients like collagen, gelatin, amino acids (such as glutamine), and electrolytes — which can help strengthen joints, bones, and muscles, as well as improve skin, and promote hydration. And while you could just sip it for breakfast, Erewhon’s decision to make it into a holiday specialty is a fun take on the wellness essential.
Interested? Just drop by any Erewhon tonic bar through the end of the month for a taste, or order through the app. And if you’re a member at Erewhon, you can try this spicy hot chocolate for free (!) through Dec 14. However, if you’re not in the LA area, you can make it yourself using FOND’s recipe on their website. (You mainly need FOND’s Ginger & Cayenne Beef Bone Broth, full-fat coconut milk, dark cocoa powder, maple syrup, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.
TBH, I think I’ll go cozy up with some hot cocoa (no bone broth) myself now — but I could be convinced.
