5 Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

Sometimes, it feels like life is playing on fast forward. Your day is a blur of wake up, eat, go to class, eat, talk to friends, eat, study, sleep and repeat. It’s hard to find time to take care of yourself when there seems to never be time. However, here are 9 easy ways to fit self-care in your busy schedule.

1. Let your emotions out. Most of us, when it comes to emotions, try to hold it in as much as we can and hold ourselves together. We constantly stuff ourselves with emotions only to have it all come out. Ignoring how we feel doesn’t make the feeling go away. Write or paint what you’re feeling, or just go have a good cry.

2. Join a club or develop a skill. This can help you meet people with similar tastes and gain confiendence as you see yourself progress. Most universities have plenty of clubs catered to different interests or goals. Think of something you’ve always wanted to try, like pottery or learning French, and just do it! Nothing soothes a busy mind like a good distraction.

3. Get your recommended dose of Vitamin D. There’s a reason why we have always been urged to play outside as kids and why we were much happier at that age. A lack of Vitamin D can contribute to fatigue and moodiness; it is even considered a minor cause of depression. Stay happy by walking around campus or just having lunch outdoors!

4. Learn to say no. Everyone has experienced it: the need to say yes to everything in order to be appreciated. You can only stretch yourself so far, like a rubber band you are bound to break. Learn to politely say no to things you don’t want to go to and to people you’re too busy to help. If people can’t understand your choices, they weren’t worth your time in the first place.

5. Give your body what it needs. Eat when your stomach growls, sleep when you’re dozing off in class and take time to compose yourself when you feel like you’re so close to losing it. There’s a reason why our bodies give us these hints, so make sure to check up on yourself and attend to your needs.

Right now, you may be asking yourself: “Is this really important?” The answer is absolutely yes. Self-care keeps you focused, happy, and healthy. College is the chapter of your life where, for once, you have to be independent. After all, the only person who will have your best interest in mind is yourself.

Communication student by day, sleeper by night. I'm a Montreal-born and Toronto-raised lover of all things marketing and media. You can usually find me reading Her Campus, Flare or Refinery29.
Hey! I'm Stephanie Wilcox, and I am a professional writing major here at York U! I spend most of my time playing piano or ukulele and crying over books and boybands. I'm currently studying Korean as an elective, and I hope to do plenty of travelling after I graduate. I believe in fighting for a better, safer, and more equal future, especially through words and writing. This is my third year at York University, and I am thrilled to begin writing with Her Campus this year as a CC and seeing the impact we will be making here!
