Place to Work out on Campus While the SERF Undergoes Construction

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

In case you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard the news, I’ll be the first to break it to you: UW-Madison’s Southeast Recreational Facility (SERF) is under construction and closed until at least late 2019. Yes, you read that correctly—the most visited recreational facility on campus is currently being redone and is unavailable to all students. If you’re now nervously contemplating where you’re supposed to rock your cute leggings and tanks, stop worrying! Here are five other hot spots for you to work out at on campus:

1. Ogg Hall Fitness Center

Ever heard of the Phillips Lounge at Ogg residence hall? Well, now it’s the Ogg Fitness Center! Students and RecSports members are welcome to use all cardio and free-weight equipment during the SERF’s construction. The fitness center even has machines with HD touchscreens, so you can binge-watch your favorite shows as you run!

2. The Nat

If you’re looking for a place to swim, lift weights and/or get your heart pumping, then the Nat is the place to be. The Natatorium is located right along the lakeshore path and is open every day of the week. For all you heavy lifters, the Nat will house the single largest weight room among RecSports facilities.

3. The Shell

While the SERF is under construction, the Shell will be home to UW’s only indoor track and ice skating rink. Intramural sports will also take place at The Shell for the time being. Rumor has it that the Shell will be introducing new equipments as they rid and update the old ones.

4. Nielsen Tennis Stadium

Want to channel your inner Rafael Nadal after watching the U.S. Open last week? You can! The Nielsen Tennis Stadium offers indoor and outdoor tennis and squash courts year round and is the perfect place to start working on your form.

5. Lakeshore Path

While the weather’s still nice (please don’t jinx this), be sure to take a jog, bike ride or walk down the lakeshore path. Located along Lake Mendota, the path makes for a scenic and novel location to workout. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even veer off to Picnic Point.

Now that you’re informed on all the places to work out around campus, be sure to go check them out! Saying, “But, the SERF isn’t open,” just isn’t enough of an excuse to sit around and do nothing. Get moving!
