8 Easy Ways to Stay Healthy and Fit this New Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

1. Eat Breakfast.

A major thing that a lot of people forget, or claim they don’t have time for, is eating breakfast. This is so important when trying to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle for the new year. Food feeds your brain, and without some sort of breakfast in the morning, you’re starting yourself off slow.

2. Use walking as transportation.

Especially as students, we have the opportunity to walk everywhere, and with the great weather we’ve been blessed with this winter, walking should be taken advantage of. Walk to class or the grocery store, or simply just go for a walk!

3. Replace your guilty pleasures.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone has his or her guilty pleasure when it comes to food. Some prefer sweet, others salty. When it comes to sweets, a lot of us forget that fruits have good sugars that can also satisfy these cravings. But if you’re dying for chocolate, try something like raspberries and chocolate chips, or apples and Nutella.

4. Moderate your food intake.

When it comes to fitness resolutions for the new year, most people go straight to cutting out carbs. This isn’t great for your body, as carbs turn into sugars, which store energy. So rather than cut specific things out of your diet, eat in moderation.

5. HYDRATE!

Remember the 8×8 rule: eight 8-ounce glasses every day. If you’re forgetful, try downloading an app that notifies you when you should drink more water. Maybe even purchase a cute water bottle if it’ll help remind you!

6. Exercise!

Obviously, if you want to get into shape, you’re going to have to do some sort of exercise. Do something that makes you sweat everyday, even if you only have 15 minutes. A quick exercise you can do without going to the gym is running up and down the stairs, or you could find a workout video online to do in your room.

7. Cut out processed foods.

The easiest thing to in order to improve your health and body is to not buy processed foods. If they aren’t in your house, you’re less likely to eat them.

8. Take personal time.

Don’t forget that your mental health is important. Read a book, watch a show, walk around the mall, start a hobby, or do something else that you love. You’ll be surprised how great you’ll feel after some “me” time.

Wilfrid Laurier

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges. My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion. Contributor writer for HerCampus Laurier Stalk me and let's be friends here: Insta & Twitter: webofem
