College students don’t have time to get sick. We’re busy with work and school, and if you know college, you know that you can’t afford to miss even one class. If you want to avoid getting a cold or the flu, take note of these five tips.
1. Stock up on supplies
As soon as the weather changes, head to the drugstore to stock up on cough drops, tea bags, hand sanitizer, medicine and disinfectants. This way, if the flu does hit, you won’t have to leave your house.
2. Keep things clean
Keeping your living environment clean is a good way to avoid getting sick. Dust, vacuum and wipe down all surfaces. If someone you know is sick, clean up after them if they come over. If you feel yourself getting sick, disinfect the surfaces you touch, and don’t forget to wash your bedding!
3. Be aware of your surroundings
If you live in a dorm, take public transportation or work in a busy environment, be prepared. It’s especially important to be aware of your surroundings during cold and flu season because germs spread so quickly. Wash your hands frequently, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. If you do get sick, be sure to cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze. You don’t want to get others sick, just like you wouldn’t want them to get you sick.
4. Fill your body with superfoods
You can boost your immune system by filling your body with superfoods like ginger, berries, turmeric, citrus fruits, leafy greens, chia and green tea. Taking vitamins can be helpful, too. The best immune-boosters are Vitamin C and Vitamin D.
5. Rest
Lastly, and most importantly, rest! Go to bed early, and get a good night’s sleep. Your body needs sleep to be able to fight off illnesses, and adequate sleep helps you recover faster if you do get sick.
