Now that we are officially deep into the fall semester, have you started to notice your stress levels rising? Itchy noses? The disastrous mess and stench in your room? Easily being distracted from assignments? The world coming to an end? That’s OK, because there is a solution to all those problems: essential oils.

About this time of the semester, things start to get hectic from balancing school life, social life and your mental state. Incorporating essential oils into your daily life can really help you have a strong mental and physical health to tackle anything college throws at you. For the past two weeks I’ve been experimenting with four different essential oils. Here are my thoughts for each of them:

1. Lavender

Personally one of my favorites, lavender is commonly used for relaxation and calming the nerves down. However, I started using lavender as a perfume. For those 8 a.m. morning classes where your body is incapable to leave your bed and didn’t have time for a shower, take a couple drops of this oil and apply it to your nape, wrists and back of your knees. This way you smell good while also feeling relaxed and awake..

2. Eucalyptus

Because college is a germ-infested environment, I recently caught a sinus infection and we all can agree a stuffy nose is brutal. To prevent congestion, instead of using Vicks, I used a diffuser and simply breathed in the steam for 5-10 minute before sleeping. This was a really effective method and helped me sleep throughout the night without tossing and turning from sniffling. However, this essential oil can cause irritation if used without diluting it. So never ingest or use this oil undiluted.3. Peppermint

Is anyone else thinking about winter when I mention peppermint? I might’ve been tempted to make some peppermint hot chocolate. This is one of the few essential oil that can be ingested without dilution. So instead of making hot chocolate, every alternate day, I would drink a cup of water with 2-3 drops of this oil before showering. This is known to clear up your digestive system and toxins that are in your body, which is a great way to stay healthy. 4. Lemon

Remember when you said to yourself you would take out the trash from your room and get rid of the old Taco Bell bags on your desk but you didn’t? Now that your room smells like a garbage dump, lemon oil is there to help. Lemon is a fruit that is known for detoxing not only your body but basically anything. To clean my kitchen counters and the microwave, I took 10 drops with ½ cup of olive oil. It took away all stubborn stains and even left the room smelling clean and refreshed!

These four essential oils have changed the way I live and feel in only two short weeks. Do yourself and favor and try them out! You’ll thank me later.
