8 Exercises To Kick Start Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

We all know that exercise is a crucial part of maintaining our health. Whether it be the lack of or increasing the amount of exercise we do, exercise can have many benefits including weight control, reduced risk of heart disease, aid in managing blood glucose, improving mental health and mood, strengthening bones and muscles, and improving sleep. However, there are a few more benefits to getting out and exercising in nature. Outdoor exercise can save you money, it’s convenient, and it’s a way to connect with your community, family or friends. Also, since the environment is ever-changing, there are always new obstacles that your body has to overcome as part of your workout, in addition to the beautiful scenery that the outdoors gives us while we workout. Try any of the following activities this summer to switch up your workout and build a healthy routine:

1. Hiking

One hour of hiking can burn over 500 calories depending on the incline, speed, and load you’re carrying.

2. Biking

Biking is a low-impact activity, meaning that is causes less stress on your joints and bones. Biking also works all major muscle groups.

3. Running

Running is claimed to post-pone signs of aging.

4. Walking

Make sure to look for shoes with good heel and arch support!

5. Swimming

Swimming can aid in reducing inflammation that can lead to atherosclerosis, or narrowing of arteries.

5. Kayaking/Canoeing

Both can be very peaceful and meditative activities as you are out in the quiet nature. They can even be very strenuous and heart-pumping activities as well.

6. Ultimate Frisbee

This can be a fun, relaxing activity that hones in on your concentration and fine motor skills in addition to those gross motor skills.

6. Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding works a variety of muscles for a full body workout and improves balance, similar to surfing. This can be a great stress reliever.

7. Roller Blading

You could potentially burn almost twice as many calories compared to running, while also enjoying a fun exercise that utilizes the leg, hip, lower back, and buttocks muscles.

8. Yoga

Yoga increases your flexibility (as you might expect), is a toning exercise, and focuses on protection from injury, as well as relaxation breathing and stress management. Therefore, yoga is a great all-around activity for wellness.
