10 Things You Can Do When You Need a Change

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

Sometimes you just need a change…

1. Get a new hairdo

This is number one, because it’s probably my favorite. A new hairdo, whether it’s dying it a new color, getting extensions, getting a perm, cutting off 5 inches, chopping it off all together, or simply styling it a different way, will make you feel like a completely new you—a different you, maybe even a better you, but still you.

2. Change up your wardrobe

Pinterest can help you here. You know that outfit you liked on Pinterest that you thought only belongs on your board and hardly in your closet, that outfit you liked but would never considering wearing yourself? BUY IT. Step out of your comfort zone, break out of your shy box and own up to your style. Brave the new look that you so desire.

3. Experiment with your makeup

If you’re reading this article it probably means you’re bored with your look or you need something new or different in your life…obviously. Well, makeup sets the tone for your entire face, which means that this could potentially be an area of drastic change. Makeup is fun to experiment with when you actually try and make an effort to learn how (not that I’m such an expert). However, simply experimenting with a new lip color or eye shadow may be just the change you need.

4. Pick up a new hobby

If you’re more or less just bored with life in general, it may be time to pick up a new hobby. Learn something new. Pick up a new sport (I suggest something easy, or not so easy, like disc golfing), learn how to quilt, start blogging, or catch up on your cooking skills (you’re going to need to learn how to make things other than pizza and microwave popcorn eventually).

5. Get a piercing

Get your doubles or cartilage pierced (for the 3rd time), maybe even your trag, bellybutton, or if you’re feeling really risky, your nose, lip or Monroe. It will only hurt for a few seconds; otherwise it’ll be quite the breath of fresh air.

6. Make a new friend

It’s always good to make new friends. New friends will take you to new places, introduce you to new things, new mindsets and new perspectives. Your world always changes as people enter and leave your life. If you’re looking for a change, this is the way to do it.

7. Paint your nails a different color

This seems insignificant, but even the little things in life can have a big impact. Paint your nails a color you maybe wouldn’t have considered before, like black for instance. Not very many people are bold enough to paint their nails black, but it definitely can be done.

8. Travel

Traveling, experiencing different people and different cultures is life changing. Sometimes it isn’t what you’re wearing or how your nails are painted; sometimes what you need is a new place, a completely new world. For some reason, I feel like a completely different person when I’m traveling in far away places. But maybe that’s not the right way to put it; it’s more like I feel like I have a clean slate, free from the person I have been molded into back home. I can be whoever I want to be. Traveling can change you a little bit temporarily and a little bit permanently.

9. Branch out into other music genres

I’m a firm believer in music influencing your mindset and vice versa. I believe your personality influences your taste in music and the music you listen to influences your mood and personality. Music is powerful and if you are looking for a change in lifestyle, mood or perspective, try listening to music you haven’t ever really explored before. Music is like beer—it may not taste good the first or even 20th time around, but it sort of grows on you.

10. Start working out, or try out a healthy diet

Your health has a major effect on how you feel in life. A healthy lifestyle, exercising and eating healthy, can change and improve your life in almost every area of your life. You’ll find you have more energy and more confidence with a strong and healthy body.

Sometimes you just need a change, something to propel you forward, get you out of a rut, help you move on, help you create yourself or discover yourself again. Either way, whether it’s a temporary or permanent change, it’s important to experiment, to wander outside your comfort zone, to learn and to grow. Sometimes these inklings to change are life’s way of telling you that you’re not where you need or want to be yet. We’re always changing, always growing, and that’s a good thing. Change is good.
