The Amazing Benefits of Yoga

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

I believe that physical health is just as important as mental health.  The foods we eat and the activities that we do can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves.  If we eat junk food, we’ll feel like junk.  But if we eat fruits and veggies, we’ll feel like a million bucks!  Also, if you are an avid gym goer, why do you choose to sprint on the treadmill? To burn off calories? Release some anger and aggression? To forgive or forget someone?  To increase muscle strength? Well, all of these things and more can be achieved through the practice of yoga.

During yoga, you aren’t just going from pose to pose.  You are practicing mindfulness and executing every movement with intention and self appreciation. Ujjayi Breath is a three-part breath that affects the cardio-respiratory system by releasing frustration, calming the mind and body, and building energy.

I have been practicing yoga for a few years now, but haven’t completely dedicated myself to it until last month. I go to class four times a week, which I consider the time I take for myself.  You are constantly serving others and running from place to place. Take a break and do something that will benefit you both physically and mentally.

Yoga is mindfulness, patience, self-love, lack of ego and kindness.
