The Bond Between a Girl and Her Boy Dog

Dodger came into my life in 2017 when I was graduating from elementary school, not knowing the impact this little dog would have on my life. At the time, he was just a tiny puppy, but over the years, he became so much more than a pet. He became my best friend.

Dodger is a Boston Terrier, a breed known for being intelligent, affectionate, and loyal. Before Dodger, I had three other dogs who were some of the best dogs my family could have ever asked for, and I will always love them. Each of them brought something special into my life and grew up with me.

However, there is something unique about the bond I share with Dodger. He has been by my side through some of the most important years of my life, and because of that, he holds a special place in my heart.

Our Story

Dodger was there when I came home from elementary school, then middle school, then high school, and now college. It feels odd to realize how many years have passed since he first came into our lives. While I have changed so much over the years, one thing that has remained the same is Dodger waiting for me at the end of the day. No matter what happened at school, whether I had a good day or a bad one, I always knew I could come home and find him there.

My parents surprised my brothers and I with Dodger, after we moved to a completely new city.

Moving was difficult because everything felt unfamiliar. We were leaving behind friends, routines, and the comfort of what we had always known. Bringing Dodger home changed everything. He gave our family something to focus on during that transition and quickly became our best friend. Looking back, I truly believe he helped make that new place feel like home.

Fun fact: Dodger is named after the Los Angeles Dodgers; throughout my childhood, the Dodgers and baseball have been a very significant part of our everyday lives. His name truly holds a deep meaning for my family.

One of the things I admire most about Dodger is how intelligent he is. He seems to understand when someone is upset, stressed, or needs company. On the days that I have cried, celebrated, struggled, or rested, he has always stayed close by. Sometimes he will sit next to me without making a sound, and somehow that is enough. His presence alone is comforting. Dogs have a special way of making us feel understood even though they cannot speak.

TIME PASSES VERY FAST

For most of my childhood, I never thought about dogs getting older. I think part of me believed that Dodger would always be the same energetic puppy running around the house. As I have gotten older, however, I realized that he is aging too.

That realization has been difficult because it reminds me that time passes much faster than we expect. It almost feels like our roles have changed. For years, Dodger was my push through life challenges, and now I want to be there for him just as much as he has always been there for me.

MY FAVORITE MEMORIES WITH DODGER

Whenever I come home from college, Dodger is always the most excited to see me. He waits by the door, jumps with excitement, and follows me around the house, making sure I never leave again. When it is time for me to go back to school, he sits by the door and watches me leave. Moments like that remind me how strong our bond really is.

One of my favorite memories of Dodger is his singing. Yes, Dodger sings. Every time someone starts singing “Happy Birthday,” he immediately joins in with his own version. Hearing him bark and “sing” along has become one of my favorite parts of every birthday celebration. It is a small thing, but it always makes me smile and creates memories that I know I will cherish forever.

Even while I am away at college, Dodger continues to brighten my days. Whenever I call my mom, I always ask to talk to him. As soon as he hears my voice, he lets out a low bark that sounds like he is saying, “I love you.” It may sound funny to some people, but it means the world to me. Those little moments remind me how much I miss him and how lucky I am to have him in my life.

MY WHY

On the days when life feels overwhelming, Dodger reminds me to keep moving forward. When I feel lonely, he reminds me that I am not alone. His loyalty, love, and companionship have helped shape who I am today.

Life without Dodger is something I never want to imagine. He is more than a pet; he is my family, my companion, and my true best friend. No matter where life takes me, the memories we have shared and the love we have for each other will always stay with me.

I love you, Dodger.
