6 Ways to Boost Your Mental Health

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

As we all know, the month of October is just around the corner. This first full week of October is dedicated to Mental Illness Awareness by the National Alliacne of Mental Illness (NAMI).

On college campuses it is not always apparent when someone is struggling with a mental illness, however; studies show that 1 in 5 studetns are. Students often push their needs to the side in a fear of being judged or because they just don’t know where to start.

If you’re looking to boost your mental health this semester here are a few ways to do it!

1. Talk to someone.

Many college campuses offer counseling services for students that include screenings and therapy. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to a stranger, find someone you can trust; whether it’s a family member, friend, or peer, sometimes we all just need to vent!

2. Educate yourself.

Education = empowerment!  Knowing more about mental health in general is extremely helpful. Get familiar with the conditions and symptoms of certain illnesses. NAMI (www.nami.org/)  is a great source to learn more about mental illness and where to find help.

3. Find an outlet.

Dealing with mental illness may not always be fun, but it’s important that you find time for something you do enjoy. Read. Write. Jam out to your favorite song from middle school! Whatever it is, do it and do it often!

4. Sleep more.

Yep! That’s right — who doesn’t love a good nap? A lack of sleep can really take a toll on your health both mentally and physically.

5. Practice positive affirmations.

We all love getting a compliment or two. You don’t have to wait to hear it from someone else, start your days off with positivity! “I am strong. I am confident, and I will conquer this day!”

6. Breathe.

Stop for a moment and breathe. Know that you are not alone. We are all human and we’re all dealing with something.
