Healthy Options on the Go!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

We all know that our 2018 resolution promise to ourselves to have a healthier lifestyle might be slowly running away from us. March midterm blues are kicking in and I’m sure all we want to do is sit on our couches binge watching This Is Us while inhaling whole bags of Doritos (just me???). It’s hard being on the go and trying to resist all the unhealthy lunch and dinner options when you just need to eat! I decided to make it a little easier on you and share some of my favourite quick “on-the-go” places to stop by!

Even if you’re not on the go these places are amazing and I would recommend them to anyone.

Green Rebel – Multiple Locations

Green Rebel is the perfect stop for a healthy lunch. They have salad boxes, rebel boxes (more along the lines of a bowl style – Protein option, grain, and everything else you can imagine), sandwiches, smoothies and more. There are options for everyone! And an even better bonus is that there is one in the Rideau Centre! (Maybe we don’t have to feel so bad after spending the whole day in the mall and getting absolutely no fresh air? ?)

Item to try: BLAT (Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, Tomato, Provolone, Aioli) – I mean c’mon….

Blossom Vegetarian Café – 209 Gilmour Street

Blossom is exactly what it says it is!! A vegetarian café – this place is so warm and homey and with all the options they have, even if you aren’t vegetarian you will fall in love. Their menu ranges from “burgers” and sandwiches, to power bowls to salads. They even have fresh baked goods! This isn’t so much an “on-the-go” style as it takes a little longer to prepare but I couldn’t bear to leave it out of the list.

Item to try:  Sweet Potato Cashew Burger w/ Fresh Cut Fries

Pirho Grill – Multiple Locations

Oh Pirho, how much you mean to me. I was newly introduced to Pihro this year and now I’m addicted (seriously the guy who works there recognizes me…. Embarrassing). But let me tell you, it is well worth the embarrassment! Pihro is set up as a “build- your-own” bowl/salad. You get to pick your grain or green or even both, choose your protein (ranges from chicken, beef, falafel, pork) and then build it up with toppings and an array of sauces.

My Order: Super Green and Grain Mix (Arugula, Kale, Spinach, Lettuce w/ Yellow Rice), Hummus, Tzatziki, Chicken, Olives, Red Quinoa, Pickled Onions, Cucumber and Tomato all drizzled with a Lemon Tahini dressing.

Mad Radish – Multiple Locations

Mad Radish is one of those places where you’re semi-okay with paying 10 dollars for a salad (I know, I know… we are students!) but once the food hits your mouth, you will understand completely. Their menu ranges from salads, to warm bowls, soups, snacks and more! The cool thing about Mad Radish that I like is that it is different! They have something for everyone, with ingredients that you can’t just get at the Subway that’s by your house.

Item to try: Falafel Salad…. Yeah, you read that right.
