HCuO Guide to Easy New Year’s Resolutions (Or Not!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

If you find it hard to stick to your New Year’s resolutions, try these tips to reach your goals!

Step 1: Think about why you want to make a resolution
If you don’t want to, don’t! Committing to a change you aren’t sure you want to make is silly. Are you doing this for yourself or for others? Will this make you happy? Is this resolution going to improve your well-being? Is this something you want to take on?

Step 2: Pick a resolution and keep it!
I’m a B-I-G fan of baby steps. If you don’t want to set yourself up for disappointment, choose something small that you can improve on. A really good one is just to drink more water everyday. Another way to go about this is to stop drinking sugary things like juice and pop. It makes a world of difference. Try drinking a glass of water before you reach for a snack. You may find you don’t even want the snack afterwards, and this is an easier resolution than saying you’ll work out 5 days a week because … come on… you can do this resolution in your pyjamas. This goes for any type of resolution. Pick something easy and manageable and conquer it! You’ll feel better achieving a small goal than falling short of a larger one.

Step 3: WRITE IT DOWN
By the time March (or even the end of January) rolls around, reassess. Do you like your resolution? If you have a calendar, or keep reminders on your phone, add your resolution weekly (or everyday if you need it). Another option is to write it down old style with pen and paper. Writing your resolution down can keep you organized and on track. To stick with the water-drinking resolution: Add a reminder to your phone mid-day to have a glass of water. Easy peasy!

Step 4: Stay motivated
A good way to stay motivated, in any resolution, is to think of a role model involved in the same field as your resolution. Why do you look up to this person? This person could have an Instagram dedicated to working out, eating clean, or could just be your favourite Victoria’s Secret Angel. How much water do you think Josephine drinks a day? That skin? GORG.

Step 5: Give yourself a pat on the back
Did you make it to April? July? NOVEMBER? However far you got in your resolution, give yourself a round of applause for even making one. Also take time to reflect. About the water intake: Did you become more aware of how you feel without sugary drinks? Did you feel more hydrated, lose weight, or find your skin looked better? Resolutions are cool because they give you the chance to try new things and you can find out whether or not these changes are something you want to implement in your everyday life. All you did was drink water!

More easy resolution ideas:

  • Drink more tea.
  • Walk more places.
  • Spend one extra hour studying per week.
  • Dress however you want.
  • Say what you mean.
  • Try to memorize one new word a day in a different language.
  • Do one extra thing a day that makes you happy
