Hot Girl Jog? More like Cold Girl Jog: How to Not Hate Running during the Winter Months (Because I’ve Been There)

Though I’m a regular runner and member of the club running team, the approach of chilly winter weather accompanied by 30+ mph winds makes me start to rethink my love for running and the motivation I have to do it. Whether I am going for a quick 1-mile jog or completing my long run, the cold constantly deters me. However, I’m here to offer some motivational tips and reminders on why we shouldn’t hate winter running and should instead embrace the chilly months!

Tip 1: Remember How Hot it Was This Summer

Remember when you walked outside this summer and it was 90 degrees outside? Yeah, me too, and it was miserable. Just remember, you can always add layers to your cute winter running outfit, but there isn’t much to remove in the summer. And you can always grab a fun hot drink somewhere afterwards! Maybe treat yourself to a new cute hat or mittens, and grab a friend to enjoy a chilly (but cute) jog together!

Tip 2: Embrace that Treadmill Lifestyle

I used to be an avid treadmill hater until last winter, when I decided to train for a marathon during the winter months. I went from barely being able to run a mile before I got bored, to running 8 miles in one session! I learned that podcasts and TV shows are the key when it comes to treadmill running without boredom. Some of my favorites include the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper and Love Island!

Tip 3: Don’t Force it

Though most of these tips are about motivating yourself to get out there, I think it’s important to note that some days, you aren’t gonna be in the mood to head out for that jog (or it’s gonna be 20 below 0 degrees outside), and that is OK! I usually tend to run lower mileage weeks over the winter months, and I use it as a way to let my body recover from previous seasons. I always remind myself that running is supposed to be something I enjoy and feel strong while doing, and it’s ok to take some time off if my body needs it.

Tip 4: Find Some Buddies!

There’s nothing worse than going for a cold run alone, so grab a friend and get out there together! Sometimes after a long day, even just a short run is all I need to relieve stress, especially accompanied by a friend or two. I recommend checking out the Michigan Running Club which has runners of all speeds and distances. There’s always someone to run and chat with!

With that being said, if running isn’t the vibe, take a day off and rest your body! But I hope these tips help you stay active this winter!

I am a current Junior at the University of Michigan, majoring in Women and Gender Studies, with the goal of becoming a Certified Lactation Specialist who assists women who are breastfeeding.

I grew up in Owosso, Michigan, which is a small town between Flint and Lansing, Michigan, where I went to Owosso High School. I currently hold the Pole Vaulting record of 12ft in Owosso, and was also a Cross Country runner.

In my free time, I am also a member of the Michigan Club running team, where I am a CPR-certified safety officer. I also love to be creative and paint and embroider! My roommates and I love to get dressed up and go out to brunch or dinner, and have movie nights at our apartment as well. I also spend my time shadowing Lactation specialists to work towards my certification.
